I'm geting close to the moment i will have finely my october 1950 export get painted ;)
It's originaly pastel green L11. And i will keep that color.
I had a few question to make sure not making any mistake.

- First of all, have any of you painted that color and do you have any clues to get the correct formula paint ? Glasurit ? autocolor ? Dupond ? I had made research on glasurit website... and no formula is offered.
- The benzin tank and his cover should be painted aslo Pastelgreen, right ?
- The 3 covers on the front (to access to the sterringbox for exemple) should be painted also pastelgreen, right ? not black in 1950.
- My wheels were originaly plain one color. Pastel green also. when did they offer the 2 tone colors ?

Thanks.
Alex

Check with a DuPont paint supplier. They bought Speis-Hecker many years ago, and Speis was one of the paint suppliers to VW. They had the code and forumla for my '57 and mixed it perfectly. They did not have the code for my '50 however, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

I think the Spies Hecker website is still up and they had a page there where you could search paint codes....

Hi Alex
I am pretty sure that if you had single colour on a pastel green car its not pastel green on the wheels its a different green colour, I have seen it on some original pastel green cars including my own -52. I can have a look to see if I have any paint leftover from painting my wheels if you need a sample.

I'm using L11 now on a different project, my painter uses PPG/Ditzler code 42672, good luck.

I'll throw in a big "agree" on the different monotone wheel color

What a beautiful vert in the pic.

Wasn't this light green wheel a '52 only color?

Thanks for all the answers !

Bengt, I have seen cars with lighter green color wheels like yours, but my wheels really looked L11pastel green, if not even a bit darker... i'm confused.
Also do you know for the benzin tanks and the covers in the front ?

oldsplitvw, i don't know what credit can we give to those "auto show" pictures, as you may know, the car displayed were prepared for those show. Sometime different color combinaison or more shiny paint...

ZwitterND : would you have the same for sedan cars ? no kabriolet. thanks/

KAMAX,

Below is a picture of my Oct' 50 11G. It has L11 painted wheels, (just like the car) and I believe that's how they were painted on the 1950 sedans and went to 2-tone wheels in '51.
Regards,
Jim

From past discussion:
Solid color or two tone wheels were options in 50'.
Solid color wheels were available with a pinstripe option for 50'.
The solid color wheel option was dropped by 51.

Im not buying the solid wheel color dropped by 1951. I've seen plenty of old 16" wheels dated 1952 that look just like the ones above (single color a little lighter then L11).

In the light resto I gave my split I searched for about a year for a source of info and finally found a 1959 Glasurit paint catalog at a automotive paint store in Phoenix that had been around since the 50's... is said, that 1952 Wheels were L16 Hellgrun (Light Green) and it stated in the comments section "1952 Wheel Color ONLY"

If you log onto the Glasurit (RM-BASF) site today it still says that. In fact its listed in It's Limco and was listed in it's UNO section when UNO was offered.

I mixed it up and sprayed it on the wheels and frankly it looks closer to what we have seen in previous threads of Auto shows and brochures of splits having single color wheels. Im not speaking for 50's and 51's... I don't know, but in July of 52' they were spraying them L16.

Here's mine with single color L16 Hellgrun wheels. (color is just slightly lighter than L11)

This pic below shows the contrast of colors a little better.

thanks for the infos.
So the lighter green wheels would be a 52 thing... so for my 50 the same color L11 pastel green would be ok ?

What for the other parts ?? (Benzin tank and the covers on the front trunk ?)

thanks.

I dont agree with this, seen -50 with this light green wheels also.
Benzin tank, body colour on -50 (black on -52)
Cover, grey I think, the only with bodycolour is the Karmann what I know of.

Here are some fresh pictures of Arlette jsut been painted L11 pastel green. After years of resto and collecting parts i wanted to share to thanks you for your helps and advice.
For the wheels as my car is october... almost 51... i have decided to go on with 2 tone wheels.
The benzin tank and the cup will be painted L11.
I'm still wondering what color i will use for the VW sign on the babymoons and the bumper rib... L11 also or Black ?
ok... here are some pic ;)

Nice Alex. Ready for the meeting in Champagne?

Very nice paint work! Bumper groove with L11 for '50, my fuel tank is some kind of gray (1952), difficult to say the tone. And the rims should be 2-tone for '50.
