Just bought a '78 drove around block a few times felt and sounded normal, but needed tune up jets cleaned etc. (sat alot last few years). A few days later started it up and had lost power didn't idle well anymore and had back firing & loud valves, on passenger side. Decided to attack the carbs first, removed them to do a rebuild etc. Then today I took a look at whats under the valve covers and to find out the clearances.

#1's felt ~normal no play, could get a .004 blade in, ok onto #2 - here is my question - never had hydraulic valves - is this valve supposed to have this much play cold? - it's like a 1/4 inch! Do you think the huge gap will disappear when I get it warmed up? Will an air logged hyd valve make it backfire?

Looks like a bled down hydraulic lifter to me. Do a valve adjustment and pre-load them to 1.5 turns, and see what happens.
