  View original topic: Air Con: Leak or Condensation?

After six hours or so of driving with air conditioning on nearly full I noticed a steady drip of moisture:

I looked up and found it coming from here:

The source seems to be the low pressure (?) hose coming from the compressor. There was moisture on the hose where what I assume is outer insulation is cut diagonally:

The moisture was clear and didn't have any odor or feel of viscosity. I haven't noticed this before and I ran the air con quite a bit on my trip to Utah. On this drive I had four people, a dog and lots of camping gear in the van and the air is more humid here and I'm at sea level.
Forgive me if this is a stupid question but I tried to figure it out myself from this thread:

and the Bentley but no joy.

It is normal for condensation to form on the suction side of the system. Just like a soda can. The foam acts as a barrier to the humidity.

Those of us living in warmer climates see this regularly with the AC on. All is normal :D enioy your AC.

In 1987 we drove our 1986 vanagon from New Mexico to Pennsylvania. we bought it new, and it was a great trip till we reached somewhere around St. Louis. one of the kids said "hey, the rug is real wet back here." My husband was driving, and he exited the interstate and when he made a right turn, the kids started screeching as water poured out of the overhead AC cowling. whoah. We stopped at a VW dealership (van still under warranty), they blew and pulled plugs of ice and dirt out of the drains for the AC. a lot of water followed. yes, in humid weather, they condense a lot of moisture!!

Okay I'm relieved - thanks all!
Can you tell I've never had a vehicle with air conditioning before?

Really? :shock: Couldn't tell. 8) I'll take your mild summers, but you can keep those winters.

And here's the other side of the coin;
If you are running the AC and see nothing dripping from under the van--you've got some problems--
