You want some 90 weight, or 80 90w gear oil. Fill the transmission until the fluid level is up to the side filler plug. |

Bus trans takes a little under 8 pints of oil to fill.
Since it is a Hypoid ring & pinion you need something made for it.
In the performance engine section there is a sticky on gear oil.
Valvoline is was what VW used when servicing when they came to the USA. It is good oil.
I prefer Redline ShockProof HeavyDuty in my own transmissions. |

Most gear oils do not say "Hypoid" on the bottles. They are usually classified as GL-1, GL-2...Gl-6.
VW intended the transmission for GL-4 gear oil. You can use GL-5 but just make sure it complies with the MT-1 specifications. Some old GL5 oils were found to corroded yellow metals...like your synchros in the transmission. If the oil meets MT-1 specs, it can be used and will not corrode yellow metals under normal operating temps.
Now days GL-4 and Gl-5 are generally considered Hypoid gear oil. I prefer the MT-1 GL-5 oil over the GL-4 because it is rated for higher pressures like what are often found in offset axis Hypoid type gears.
People can argue for hours and hours about what oil is best, and make crazy claims about which brand is better...it isn't all it's hyped up to be. Just get a GL-4, or MT-1 GL-5 80-90 weight gear oil and you will be good to go.
All those leter-number codes will be on the bottle. |
