Someone said boil your carburetor in lemon juice? I have a 34pict-3 if that matters but I have no carburetor cleaning stuff.

No joke. I read it here and the guy said it works. Pine Sol.

If I have to clean a carb... I rebuild it...

Order rebuild kit...

COMPLETELY disassemble carb. Especially electric choke, solenoid, ect...

Soak it in some carb cleaner for a couple hours and use a couple old tooth brushes (no gummy type brushes, the cleaner will turn it to gunk).

Blow out carb passages with compressed air.

Reassemble.

I soaked mine in a good carb cleaner...soda blasted them...and blew them all out. Shined up nice and run like champs.

I soaked mine in a special solvent overnight. You wouldn't believe how clean it got the thing..

VWBeetleNoob Sun Aug 05, 2012 10:14 pm

How do you get that choke off? I ordered a whole rebuild kit just for the pump vacuum but I might as well replace everything but the only thing I cant get off is that choke. Do you just pop it out, twist it, bang it?

Miklo Sun Aug 05, 2012 11:44 pm

Sometimes the ceramic choke will take a few little twists but it should come out without much force.

Personally, I would disassemble, then soda blast it.

Yup. Soak, rinse, blow out with air, re-assemble.

x2 That stuff smell really bad. But works like magic. You can get it at almost any FLAPS.

1. Order the rebuild kit
2. Break down the carb completely
3. Soak it (chem dip)
4. Set the floats
5. Reassemble
6. Tune it for the engine

To each his own, I like the smell

x4.

And it's not very expensive either--so why anybody would use something other than a product that was specifically intended for this purpose is beyond me.

I read about a guy who bought a cheap hand sander at a garage sale. Bought one of those paint can buckets of parts cleaner. Submerged the carb in the can. Resealed the can. Duct taped the hand sander to the can and let it vibrate for about an hour. Sounded like an industrial sized jewelry cleaner. Sounded like a pretty smart idea.

I'm going to try it w/ my sander next time I need to clean the carb...

Resurrecting this thread from last summer - question - after carb cleaner soaking should you rinse with water , then blow out with compressed air, or is rinsing the carb cleaner off with water needed? Likely stupid question but doing this for the first time. Thanks.

Water, bad.

Tim Donahoe Tue Jul 29, 2014 4:29 pm

"Soaking" your carb may have side effects that you won't like--like the scarring of your carb's exterior from leaving it in the bucket of Berryman's overnight.

I spray Berryman's areosol into all the crevices and orifices, several times.

Wear goggles!!!!

On the last blast with the areosol, blow out all the orifices with compressed air. Keep the goggles on for this, too!

Tim
