All,
this is more of an upset post than a asking question post. I have an early production Manx..the early square back license plate bodies. I had been trying to get the monocoque up and running but then decided to focus on getting this old manx to the Manx on the Banx run in October. Today while taking a break from changing the front brakes over from 1957 to early 60s stuff, I decided to vacuum out the pan some more. While doing so, I noticed a small crack in the pan at the weld joint (where the pan was shortened). Upon closer inspection I found that the weld on the tunnel has cracked. Fearing the worst, I got up underneath and sure enough the weld appears to have not been a very good one and has cracked away from the tunnel.
The pan (1957) was shortened too little (it is one inch too long) and I believe was put under the car in late 65. In fact, the left rear shock is an original shock and could not be changed because the bolt was put in from the shock side(making it impossible to remove the bolt and shock). I ended up loosening the nut and cutting the bolt in half between the shock tower and the shock itself to remove it. That was before I knew I was going to be removing the body to do surgery on the pan. Now I have no excuse for shortening the pan.
Anyway, thought I would share the exploits. I guess a restoration will have to commence....like I needed another long term project...ha!
Regards
