Does anybody have any good ideas and pictures on how to patina a "perfectly good paint job" I'm seeing it all over and all those cars can't be naturally that perfectly patina'd.....any ideas :idea:

The fake patina, to me is a joke! Research it, it can be done.
I see no reason to fake it, you either have it or you don't, nothing wrong if you don't!

"Patina" to me, is the new fad. I have seen many(fads), and am not trashing you if that is what you want...so be it!

This goes in cycles as far as I have seen, remember the wild paint jobs from the 1980-90's? Maybe you don't!

I kinda like the survivor look of old paint that's worn through and baked off with maybe a few surface rust areas and such. To me it can get a little obvious that it's faked when people buff or sand through the paint to make it look old. I don't like that much but that's just me. I'd drive it like it is and just don't wash it or wax it for several years and leave it out in the sun, it'll start to develop some patina after awhile. 8)

edit: You could "wash" it with a scotch brite pad and then "polish" it with rubbing compound, that'd probably speed up the aging process a little.

What kind of paint job are you starting with? Original or a repaint? If it was repainted, you might try stripping it down to original and see what it looks like. There's a good thread on that in the stickys of the body/paint section.

Sandpaper + buffer would do it.

To fake it right you would need to lay down the correct color primer layers, then the correct color VW paint, then get to sanding and/or buffing as needed.

^^^^most brilliant post I've read on the Samba for months. I agree. Patina is for people who already own beaters. If your car is nice and all one color just leave it. It will be Patina'd in time.

Agree with all above. As a teen driver in the 60's, I washed my old '59 Ford every few days by driving it into the shallow part of a creek on the farm and using mom's washing powders. Rinsed it with a well bucket full of water, then paste-waxed that old paint with elbow grease and some discarded nylon underwear (sister's - not mine!). I still don't get the patina craze.

If you just have to do it, check out powerblocktv.com from a year or so back. They did a faux-tina on an early 50's Chevy pickup (Project ClassSix) that turned out nice enough.

The original poster has two other posts on how to convert a '69 to a wide-five pattern. My guess is next on his list is how to get a smaller rear window followed by asking a Brit to fly a Spitfire over his car and put some WWII lead holes into the body. :roll:

To the OG poster. To make it more realistic dont fix any body damage, and wear away paint that comes into contact with stuff frequently (ever rest your arm on the window sill?). High points along the body work work too, and as posted above you HAVE to put down the correct colors of primer to pull it off. Otherwise it will look like the neighborhood kids went to town on your car with sandpaper.

I think the "patina" catagory was founded by those that didn't have the budget to fully restore but still have the passion to drive classic and historic vehicles. I look at those type of vehicles and can't help but stop, look and wonder......if only that car could tell it's life story. How cool would that be?

its because they are doing, FLIP AND RIP cars
$500 car
the tune it up then clear coat the rust and sell it to a sucker for $5000
watch em !
but Patina to most means , natural rust. (and thin, not cancer rust)
I like Rays Restorations, a straight up guy! (not cheap)

so,
natural?
faux.? (aka antiquing) simulated rust.... $$$$
or clear coat over natural?
or clear over faux.?

pick one.

not saying I know what is best. for sure dont.
but IM Earl Scheib , to a fault.
perfect mechs. and $99 paint. even house paint....
my house is brick, because paint sucks...

Look at my gallery...My one car is not FAKE. Fake patina stands out as fake. Why not find one that is the real deal.

me too,
especially a Rhino-liner coated everything. or with camo paint.

i think the best car would be made for the stuff , Aircraft black boxes
are made from........ :shock:
