I had the paint code for the light grey on the Westfalia cabinetry 86-91 spectroscopically examined (if I have written it right) and determined to be the following color: M6062A

I used it to paint new much larger speaker grill assemblies back there for some 6 x 9 speakers, so I did not think it would look the same as the wall, but hoping the color was similar to enable the speakers to blend in a little more (seem less obvious to the eye).

With the code, you should be able to match the paint color better than you could without the code. If you want to order just the paint, I arranged to have it added to the 86-91 Vanagon section of www.paintscratch.com and you can order it there using their search methodology in which you search by vehicle (YEAR VW VANAGON) and then it shows you color choices and they call it "Light Grey Cabinetry (Interior)".

Note that GoWesty also sells this paint in the form of laminate panels here: http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=4336 under their part number GVW-S .

Note that this paint is the light color paint that is on the walls and not the dark accent color that is on the molding strips and cabinet handles. I think the darker grey paint is available in the Rustoleum Professional cans of paint commonly stocked at hardware stores.

I had my own paint mixed at Sherman Williams, so I did not test the paintscratch.com variety, but it should be very close if not exact.

Below is what my paint cans from looked like with the Sherman Williams codes, which include reference to Ford for some reason.

Now a good place is also Towerpaint.com

Less expensive for more paint than the big paintscratch.

Thanks for the info, I am about to make some mods myself and color is always an issue.....

Just to make things clear, neither the cabinetry nor the dark trim are actually painted. The cabinets have a laminate cover and the rubber is molded that way. The paint you found will have a different finish than what is there currently. The product that GW sells is an actual commercially available laminate that closely matches the cabinets. It is not paint or the original product.

I am spraying the 6 x 9 speaker grills the same color as the cabinetry so they don't stand out as much in the holes.

Thanks for doing the research and sharing it with us.

All automotive paint colours have alternates due to different batch runs, different plants doing the painting etc. Yes, even black or white.

The Ford reference is because the Sherwin Williams computer says this is Fords' 'Smoke' colour used from '57 thru '91.
Most automotive paint manufacturers have additives for changing the gloss on a colour, IE for bumper/interior use and flex additives are available too, for those plastic parts.

Bare in mind that the match is only as good as the monkey making it. In small quantities, of 1 pint or less, one drop extra of a particular tint will markedly change the colour, as may the additives. Do a spray-out test piece for final comparison.

Get this as a single stage enamel with a 'to be added before using' hardener and it'll do fine for touch-up to the laminate or with a quality touch-up gun you could spray whole panels.

As a paint instructor once told me, 50% of the population have some form of colour blindness...the other half are women :D

OK, well, has anybody sourced either the color or the vinyl that is used on the grey (86-91) ...... the grey panels on the insides of the doors. I'd like to get some of that grey vinyl itself in sheets. Or, I'd like to be able to shoot something that approximate color. I don't want to go back to the paint man to get that color!

I am looking at they grey vinyl panel that goes inside the rear hatch..... I mean subwoofer spot.

Ironically enough, my van's slider had the vinyl replaced on the upper section. Met the second owners last year who gave me a roll of that vinyl, which still has the tag on it: HDI 6688. Doing a Google search brought up this: http://www.unitedfabrics.com/do/productFamilyView?id=19573&productName=HDI-6688-Medium%20Opal . Looks dark in that sample, but here's what it looks like on the door:

It's not an exact match, but it's pretty close. At first glance you don't notice; staring at it, you realize the upper part is a tad different.

JoAnn's Arctic Grey vinyl might be close as well: http://www.joann.com/vinyl-arctic-grey/prd19510/ .

Now THAT is a good tip. meanwhile, I went out back and arrayed the various dark grey colors (they are slightly different depending on whether it is metal, plastic handles, or the vinyl).

The dark grey that comes closest of the dark greys in cans at my house is Rustoleum "Dark Machine Grey" 7587. This particular grey is closer for every sample from the van, and since there are several shades/colors in the samples, I pronounce this to be equivalent to all of them collectively.

I am going to use it on, say, the table posts and table post base, and even the metal panel under the sink.

On Amazon it is known as Rust-Oleum 7587838 Professional High Performance Enamel Spray Paint, Dark Machine Gray, 15-Ounce.

Until the images break you can see it at

or

(although judging color through your monitor will not be accurate).

Thanks for the paint matching tip. And for those looking to get the actual formica for a fridge update or cabinet update or repair, here is the exact match:

It is Formica product Number 927-58. The name of the colour is "Folkstone" and it is in the matte finish. You can order it through any Home Despot. I got mine for $80 CAD for a 4' x 8' sheet since I have some other projects in mind for this stuff.

For the darker plastic edge trim (and anything else you want to make the darker grey of the cushion strip trim, the following SEM products work nicely:
1. SEM 38353 Plastic/Leather prep;
2. SEM 17123 GM Light Gray plastic "flexible coating paint
3. SEM 13013 Satin Gloss Clear coat

www.frankcondelli.com is the N American dealer and places order with them several times a year. I purchased the rounded rubber edge moulding and latches used in the custom cabinet through him.

Not in the Americas (yet.)

NOTE: I understand Reimo is to open a US ware house........

Gunzl has the trim in stock, Frank can order.

When I asked Reimo about shipping anything to the US they didn't seem very interested - and I was standing in their store trying to spend hundreds of $ on parts!

The best match for Formica among three contenders is the Formica 927-58, which beat out the Graystone 464-58 and the Formica 961-58.

This matches one of the assertions above from Howesight. (Thanks!)

I would imagine that any of these three colors would look good depending on what is being contemplated.

PDXWesty Fri Oct 05, 2012 11:57 am

A search for Formica would have turned up the same findings from several years ago.

The laminate from GoWesty is Pionite F39 SG204 N Mercury.
