View original topic: Rusty chrome repro wheels.....

My old chrome Brazilian 5.5" steel repro wheels had some rust, which I removed with a 3M abrasive pad, but now they aren't too shiny anymore. Would it be cheaper to buy a new set or have the old ones re-chromed? (I'm thinking the new set would be cheaper.) Suggestions?

New set would be cheaper. If the old set has tires on them leave them on. Ironically, they sell better with tires because people (like me) can use them as rollers.

We use certain 3M pads to sand surfaces in preparation for paint. Just a few swipes on any chrome, and it is permanently damaged and scratched. Even scratches glass instantly.

I'd get old ones powder coated in "chrome" - and be on look out for a real OEM chrome set. Chrome in last 20 years is horrible - assume due to EPA clamp down on the caustic chemicals required for a good lasting finish.
