Been thinking of getting a rail but have heard you can't make them street legal in Missouri anymore. Any truth to this? Anyone have any tips to make them legal here? |

No truth to that. I am legal and know some others that just got legal. The highway patrol is the best contact point. Give them a call and ask what it takes. They were pretty helpful to me. Also check out kcbuggies.com we have a group in kc that's growing. |

No truth. We have a huge group of street legal rails in Jefferson County, MO as well...south of St. Louis. I agree...call your local Highway patrol and/or your local vw/buggy shop and/or search the internet.
I recommend calling around to several Highway Patrol inspection facilities. Believe it or not...you'll hear different criteria with every call...lots of "grey area" opinion. I decided to trailer mine to Jeff City. They followed the easiest method. I was told vehicles are titled by appearance and they said my rail needed to be nothing more than the frame, tranny and engine...with proof of purchace or construction for all three.
My local Highway Patrol inspection facility wanted to review receipts for every little misc. purchase (seats, belts, tires, wheels, gauges, etc...) and they also wanted to review the buggy for safety and/or meeting the guidlines for being road worthy.
Jeff City told me the frame, trans and motor are enough to define the appearance of the vehicle for titling. They also explained safety inspections and/or inspections on "road worthiness" are the job of local safety inspection facilities.
Good luck. |

So that would give the rail a speciality construction title? |

Go to your court house where you pay your taxes and get tags for your vehicles. They will give you a paper that explains what all has to be done to be street legal. In KY after you have done all that is needed you have to get the sherrif to inspect it. Then go back to the court house with the inspection and apply for a V.I.N#. Once you get the V.I.N# you can apply for a title. Then get insurance and tags and you are on the road |
