Dumb question but here it goes. I'm changing to disk brakes and putting studs on the disks so that I don't have to use the lug bolts any more. I don't like having to balance the wheel on one hand while trying to line up the lug bolt with the other. My question: the nuts I'm thinking of using come in 3/4" (19mm) and 13/16" (just under 21mm) for the wrench size. Other than that they are the same. Should I have any concern if I use the thinner 3/4" lug nuts? I know the 13/16" have a slightly thicker wall but does it realy make a difference in day-to-day use?

Thanks for your thoughts.

The wheel 'seats', acorn, are more important than the thickness of the 'sidewall' on the nut. Are the nuts you have in mind made for acorn wheel 'seats'?

Yes.

depending on the size of the studs ( stock is 14mmx1.5mm) then the 19mm nuts should be fine....
19mm is the size used on Porsches for years, with the same 14x1.5 stud size.

The studs are 14mm x 1.5mm for the portion that goes into the disk and 1/2-20 for the part the nut goes on to.

the 13/16s is a pretty common size for the aftermarket lug nuts...
I personally would prefer the 19mm since you can continue to use your tool kit's 19mm lug wrench for emergencies on the road. Otherwise you are carrying an extra lug wrench.

I've got conversion studs and 13/16's nuts on the back of my Baja and BayWindow Bus studs pressed-into `66/`67 Bug drums up front - and use Porsche alloy 19mm lugs. 19mm is essentially 3/4" - I've got an American star-bar that works perfectly for both patterns - shouldn't be too hard to find if you go that route.

I've never seen an acorn seat wheel for a VW, only ball-seat...something aftermarket?

I'm going to be using these with stock wheels. Are lug nuts with acorn seats the wrong kind?

yes, you need ball seat for Factory VW/Porsche wheels.
Aftermarket wheels are mostly acorn or 60* seats.
Get some 14x1.5 studs and use Porsche/VW correct ball seat lug nuts.

Does anyone here have experience with acorn to ball seat adaptor washers?

davidw99, I was confused on the what I was thinking an acorn seat is. It IS a ball seat that you need for stock wheels.

Thanks. I didn't know that there was a difference. Ask one question and learn something else! I might have figured it out but might not have also.
