4 tabs and i may be wrong but i think were used up untill the end of the oval in 57 maybe a little later but from what i know the only real difference is 3 slots or 4 slots for your hood emblem anyone who knows more or can correct please do as i am no expert in this area

As stated it is the number of slots for the emblem tabs the hold it on. Of course that is not the only difference between the years.

4 tab hoods are correct thru 1960(slight variations through out the years, split beetles use a 3-tab embelm), the 54?-60 use a thin stamped aluminum emblem with 4 10mm long thin tabs that fold under the hood to secure. this hood will have a flat area that the emblem sits upon.
61-63 used th same basic hood as above but with 3 round holes and an updated stamped alluminum emblem with 3 little pins that use plastic boot/clips to secure, still with the "flat" area to rest.
64(possibly mid 63) and later hood have a round "raised area for the emblem and a new cast alluminum emblem used throught the mid 70's until they dropped the emblem all together...most "super beetles" were too embarassing for VW to mark with their logo! |
