View original topic: L 87 Pearl White Question
ZwitterND Mon Nov 05, 2012 11:22 am

Getting ready to paint the rims on my zwitter and it calls for L 87 pearl white on the inner rim. I found the code on here but my paint supplier says that color pigments change over the years and the odds of getting it to like original paint without a sample are slim. My question is: Has anyone out there duplicated Pearl White recently and if so what brand & code did they use.

Thanks,
Bill

I brought a color chart with me to the powder coaters and they had something very similar when I had my wheels done. They too said the color may vary a bit... which makes me wonder when mixing a batch of paint by hand, there were likely color variations depending if it was Hans or Klaus mixing, and how many steins of beer he had on the weekend! ;)

My painter had no problem mixing up the correct color using the code off his computer.

Keep in mind L87 perlweiss NEVER looks right when you see it mixed in the can. This color has caused more angst than any other until it's actually seen on the car. (The Herbie community can vouch for this.)

Were you guys able to match it up against some original paint?

I've got a color sample booklet, something like this link below, and got as close to it as the colors they had. The color sample, paint, and end result didn't really exactly match anyway. ;)

Absolutely.

Trust me. We are experts on L87 paint.

The colors always yellow or atrophy in old color charts, so I don't trust them. The only thing you can really trust is matching the paint from an original car. And like I said, my painter was able to match the color exactly using the mix charts on his computer. (More than once!)

So baron you gave them this Glasurit code L 87 or the mix code?

98.4 parts 1051 weiss - white
1..0 parts 1066 gelbgrun - light green (?)
0.6 parts 1052 schwarz - black ("May the schwarz be with you")

That's the original formula and even if BlueBaron had paint matching done, the actual formula that resulted was NOT the same. I know mine wasn't (I would have supplied it, but can't find it  ).

and the paint on the rim doesn't weather and fade? ;)

I am beginning to think it may be easier to head over to the local hardware store and get a rattle can.

Ok, I did some hunting and found this old thread
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4...87+formula

followed the steps and bang there is the Glasurit formula

As you can see more ingredients in the mix. You can better see the print out in the gallery under parts/accessories other.
I'm sure a paint shop could identify the ingredients. Edit: Also note that there is a slight variation between the VOC formula
and the 2nd formula if you click on #2 on the left of the screen.

I didn't give him anything. I told him I wanted VW color code L87 Pearl White, and he found L87 perlweiss on his computer.

The color matched exactly. I can get the name of the paint place in Tampa that mixed it.

I'm not talking about rims. I'm talking about whole cars painted L87. (Things like door jambs and insides of glovebox doors.)

Also, you can't use old paint formulas. L87 mixes have changed over the years. My painter had a current formula that matched.

(I would also urge against basecoats/clearcoats, which has been known to tint the color.)

Edit: I'm pretty sure the paint was mixed by Color Wheel Paints & Coatings, 1926 N US 301, Tampa, FL
