Hey all,

I have an 85 weekender westy

I am looking for the stock wiring set up for the aux relay(stock) under the drivers seat and if possible where exactly the red wire that connects to the aux battery connects to on the main battery side, that is , does it connect directly to the main battery? OR does this connection to the aux battery even belong on the main battery side or does it go to the aux relay under the seat?

It appears that a long time ago some things may have been altered and i am trying to get things back to stock...and charging correctly again.

Thank you all
Todd

If you have a Bently manual, it may have your answer. I know it has a page for camper wiring. I'm not familiar with the weekender wiring.

This post has the stock configuration for the camper set up:

The relay has 5 positions and yeah i tried Bentley but man! Finding stuff on my 85 is tough

So, can someone tell me which wire from the relay goes directly to the aux battery, what i have is one red med gauge wire that crosses over to the main compartment but was not hooked up, ?? Maybe it went to the 12v plug for the little cooler?
Either way i dont know how my aux battery would get charged, sorry so confused

Thanks, todd

The five positions are

1 on far left

3 middle

1 far right

Sorry i dont have pin numbers right now
Thanks

You have five pins, hook up the four as I mentioned eariler and the fith one is the empty one.
Look on the bottom where the pins are, you should see #'s. If not there then maybe on top?

It is pretty simple. All 5 spades of the relay are used.

Originally there were 2 red wires from the pass side battery box over to the driver side battery box.

One red connected from the main battery positive to the relay spade #30.
The other came back the other way, from relay spade #87 to the cig socket under the pass seat.
Another red went from the other relay spade #87 to the aux battery positive.

That leave 2 wires to go, that come from the dash to the driver side battery box.

The blue one went to relay spade #86 to trigger the relay coil from the alternator led circuit. This was to make sure the aux battery wasn't connected until the alternator was charging.
The last wire is a red/black that plugs into the relay spade #85. This acts as the ground for the relay coil. ( I prefer not to use this wire and I make a small ground wire and run it from #85 to the screw that holds the relay to the body.)

Got it and i will try it, here is my confusion.

It appears that the 87 pin red wires goes back to the main battery compartment? This appears stock as the wire has a black protective sheath around it?

But your explination makes sense

Thank you, todd

That is the second red wire I described. It powers the cig socket under the pass seat from the aux battery under the driver seat.

The factory aux battery relay has 2 pin #87 spades. They are joined inside the relay, so anything hooked to one #87 is also hooked to the other #87. VW used the second one as an easy place to run aux battery power to something else, namely the cig socket for the electric fridge.

Todd, are you planning to use the stock fridge relay to trigger your Yandina?

tschroeder0 Mon Dec 10, 2012 7:49 pm

Ok, thanks you guys. I do understand what you are saying but I am finding some issues with my wiring, and i do believe this is stock wiring that has not been molested.

The wire that goes to the drivers side cig lighter was the one and ONLY wire that went directly to my aux battery??

The other red wire the one that you are saying should go to my aux battery to actually charge it leaves the pin on the relay and goes back to the main battery...is it possible, that this was just plumbed wrong, maybe even from the factory??

I am sure how to do this now, and cant thank you all enough, especially Mark, ( I have been pm'ing the hell out of him) Jay and the rest of you thanks too

I may actually gets this to charge, the knowledge here is truly something to be amazed at
I will wire this "correctly" tomorrow and report back.

Wait, maybe im wrong here...Jay am o missunderstanding this relay? This is the only relay i have here i have a weekender, so no fridge, is this NOT the relay to charge my secondary battery??

Sorry if im looking like a fool here
Todd

Looks like the second 87 pin is/was not hooked up to the aux battery.

Thank you all!
Todd

Sorry for the confusion Todd, what I called the "fridge relay" and the weekender (auxiliary battery) relay are the same thing. You should only have one relay under the drivers seat in stock configuration.

I think you are using a Yandina Combiner to control your auxiliary battery. If this is the case, there is really no need to use the stock relay under the seat as part of your auxiliary charging system.

tschroeder0 Mon Dec 10, 2012 9:30 pm

Well, just to keep the confusion going. What i have is whatever was stock for the 85 weekender. This i know for sure as i am the second owner and truly everything was stock when i bought the van.

I must say though, i have learned a lot from this question, i think it will benefit others in the future.

Here's a pic of a members Weekender relay from a week or so ago. Does yours look like this?

Yes, thats what i have, so, the heavier gauge wire that IS still connected to the relay is the one that is supposed to go directly to the aux battery right?

Thanks a lot
Todd

Sorry the heavier gauge RED wire that is still connected goes to the aux?
