I thought perhaps we could start a thread/sticky based on vintage dune buggy pictures and current nostalgic fiberglass buggy builds for those of us looking for inspiration, motivation, or whatever. It would be real cool if these pics are exclusively based on cars using bias ply and or knobby off-road tires. I know the radials have many advantages, but they just change the original look. A nostalgic build typically would have low back seats too! (If the seats look like a huge baby car seat, it may not belong in this thread.) There appears to be an increase of folks building dunebuggies with classic 1960's/1970's flair. I've seen many cool photos of vintage/ period correct buggies, but It would be great having multiple photos under one roof.

Notice that that buggy has VW seats on cut down bases. They were almost as common as the vinyl and foam upholstered fiberglass buckets. British sports car seats were pretty common too, like in this Manxvair survivor.

As built in 1967 with 11-15 Gates Commando tires on the rear.
Mounted on 11 inch "Jumbo Fat - Sand Blaster" rims ordered from Meyers Manx.

These days with 1978 vintage 11-15 Maxi-Trac bias/ply on the rear.

The front tires are Coker reproductions of B.F. Goodrich 7.35-14 bias/ply mounted on 7 inch rims.

Pismo 1967 - seats are from a VW and the back tires are cross-grooved Cooper farm implement bias/ply mounted on 14 inch rims.

Pismo 2011 - Sand tires are 1976 vintage 16.50 stagger cut Padla Traks bias/ply mounted on 18 inch rims.

Here's how my California Clipper looked when I built it in 1971. It had Gates Commando's on the front and Posi-traction Stagger-blocks on the rear. I wish I could find both today.

This was my dads Sandwinder back in 1969 this is the car that he used in the ads for R&H Fiberglass Sandwinder bodies. The car is now in GA. the guy that has it is a member on here so I hope he sees this and posts some current pictures.

Love the clean lines and the tires!!

"Barn Find" Manx with original interior brought back with period correct parts.

It actually came with bias tires but they were shot.

Looks close but ours looked to be the same shape as the C&D Manx exhaust.

OK, I see, that's the Meyers Manx pre-sidewinder exhaust, except you had a bolt on muffler and flipped it to the right to clear the buggy club plaque.

I'm going with bias plys. Its really the only way to go if your going period! Still hunting for original seat covers.

Starbuggy---Way to go man, I run bias-ply and love them! let's see some more pictures of your buggy! Tim Gavern of dbr ( dune buggy restoration) has some sweet repro seats, and may be able to help you out with covers as well.
