So Ive often wondered where this odd air cleaner came from? Who can translate this one?

I just came across this pic posted on the Samba!

Tram this is the filter on the T34 at your house so dont lose it!

It's for Swedish and Japanese market twin carb engines with different jetting on the carbs, for code M527, emission control for Japanese and Swedish markets only (beginning 1. August 1970) Because of the different jetting, this air cleaner was designed with a different air flow characteristics so that the exact same amount of air is delivered to each carburetor.

This modified filter must not be used for other previous configurations.

So, in short, the cleaner in question was for 1971- on models, e.g., late model dual ports, in Sweden and Japan only, as part of M527, and must not be used on anything else.
Jason- I understand German and English, translating exactly between the two is tough for me. But you get the idea.

I really don't remember that air cleaner being this type. I actually have a pair of rebushed and overhauled carbs with the best looking air cleaner I had earmarked for your project and packed away with your name on the box, along with your fuel pump NOS generator, and a bunch of other parts.

I likely still have this other one tucked away somewhere, but I'll have to dig. It's a pretty specialized air cleaner- don't know why it would have wound up here in the States... and, like I said, I really don't remember it being an "oddball" like this!

I've seen that 3 piece type before, but I've never seen one like you posted (at least that I'm aware of!)

There seemed to be plenty of the bottom type north of you Vlad! I would think this one in my pic below came from a post 70 model Type 3 as the wreckers yard rarely had models pre 69-70 when the engine was built. I think I remember the ones on the top with the smaller RHS and may have had one which went to land fill back around 2000.

That's because the bottom one was a German market part. I've got at least 1 (not being used) of these still here (while 2 are being used), sold one last year (to your friend Tram), and even have 2 of the paper element Brazilian ones. :shock:
I thought the top one was for the later model dual carbs Tram. I know I've seen pics of them on some of the UK and European cars that have been posted (mostly later cars though).

thats what I thought, I thought the top one was a latter style.

I have seen a few of the bottom type in pictures of earlier cars.

I look at the oil bath section and to me thats a dead give away early vs late as I recall reading about this somewhere in one of my manuals regarding the thermostat in the later type.

thats looks like a 68 model or earlier.

note the case breather and the obvious fact its SA not IRS. So I am sure that's just an earlier type air cleaner.

I posted that picture, my 71 has that air cleaner, and it's my understanding it came in all 71, 72, and 73 carbed type 3s, not just swedish or japanese!

Incidentally those years have the same jetting on both carbs, so it would make sense that it's because they all had the revised air filter

Vlad, my photo is of the engine bay of one of the couple of 1964 1500S vehicles left in Australia so yes, it is definitely an SA! When I built the engine I just wanted an air cleaner. It's the same type as shown on the 1500S booklet which came with the 64/65 models. I don't know what type was on later ones even though I owned two 1972 Squares wayback. Too long ago!! :lol:

well that settles that then. just as I thought.

my books backs this info up with the carb jetting so it must be correct.

I had always thought of this cleaner as a post FI - out of the US - dual carb air cleaner. Meaning the 70s got this one but I didnt know about 68-69ish.

I have also seen the one like mine used on Pumas in Brazil and thats the nick name I started to give mine was a South American "type".

That's the version I call "paper element" type. Now, the big question IS... what element fits it? The closest I came was from an early 70's Pinto. :shock:

No not that one Bob, there is a photo - Ill find it - of this same one oil type on a Brazzy T3.

havetwo sitting in a bucket about to be scrapped I said f it and put two 44ict webbers on mine and did the dual filters. But I think the two I have are 71s. But I will be at the silverdollar next month I y'all want to bye them
