Is a 1 5/8ths merged stinger exuast good for a 1776 with 044 casting big valve heads? I've heard both way that its too big and that it's more preferable.

Race car - sure its great. Street car is a whole different matter - all depends if you want any low end torque or not.

It would be a street car. I currently have that exuast on a small motor cause it was a cheap set up. But I'm going to build a 1776 mild performance motor in the next few months and I was just curious.

1-1/2" merged with a single QP muffler.

I really like the hide away exhaust, or the dual quiet packs are good also. I currently have the dual quiet packs from Berg on my 1776. Sounds good, has a really nice tone when cruising and when you get on it still sounds good.

Personally based on the dyno tests I have read (header comparision done by vw trends years ago) and done myself, I run a 1 3/8" on a 1600, 1776 and 1955. Hideaway, single quiet and have run the TriMill dual tip plus a U bend.

That being said, last year I changed the header on our buggy (mild 1776 - CB heads, dual carbs, etc) from a 1 1/2" "bob tail" to a 1 3/8" U bend with a SuperTrapp and didn't notice any difference - but this was not verified on the dyno (yet) but its not apples to apples anyway because of the muffler difference .
