Its just funny how when this was a baja. this never happened. Could it be the aftermarket chrome axle nut? I swear for like a week or so of driving, that nut was tight... the cotterpin was even loose, i could wiggle it with my hand...

So could be axle, def get the tool. So i will report back when i have an update. Thanks guys.

I'd look for a couple old rusty replacement factory nuts too. Most chrome stuff is no good. Factory parts always work well.

I like the later style stock axle nuts, the ones with the larger contact area where it meets the drum.

As an aside, any chance of a picture of the splines on this axle that keeps giving you issues?

Thanks for the Help guys. While i havent got the tool yet, i did have a 3ft pipe wrench at work (HEAVY). Took that too the nut and stood on it has been holding up for a good while now. Not moving at all. I tend to check it very single time i get into the bug. Here is what it looks like so far. Waiting to get the front fender walls straightened out to repaint it.

Just to let you know, those nuts ain't made of pipe!

Using a pipe wrench is a really bad idea and really chews this up.

Plus 3 ft long isn't long enough to get the torque on them you need. You need a 6 foot pipe on the wrench handle and then you will need to stand on that.

What axe murderer did you learn to use a pipe wrench from?

Use the right tool for the job. You will be much happier and so will the car!

I hear you! Funny enough, i heard it from a plumber. Picked up my steering u-joints from him. Since he was older, i thought i would pick his mind. Thats where the idea came from.

I took mine to shop guy pulled out the big impact simi truck big with 1 inch hose they came right off

Did someone put the spacer on the inside of the axle bearing in backwards? That will cause perpetual loosening. The only Bug I ever had axle nut problems with I traced back to that.
