Hi. I have a '71 Super Vert.
I need help installing new seat belts in the rear, specifically the two bolts that hold down the rear seat back and the female ends of the two seat belts.
Of course I was able to remove these bolts without a problem, but when I went to install the new belts, I found that the bolts would NOT next extend far enough to screw back into the car. It's as though the metal tabs that on the rear seat back has been stretched and then retracted when I removed the bolts. I considered bending the tabs. but that seemed stupid. I went and got longer bolts, but this set up looks sloppy. Can anyone offer some advice on how to get those bolts back in?
Here's a picture of what I'm talking about with the longer bolt.

Michael, I don't know if they're the same but my '69 sedan has holes for the seat belts just in front of the bolts that secure the seat back. If your car never had rear seat belts, perhaps the 'mounting holes' are still covered by the white vinyl fabric. I find it hard to believe that VW would want seat belts anchored by the seat back bolts. Hope this helps. #-o

Mort,
Thanks for the note. Unfortunately, there really is only one hole (on each side) for the seat back and the seat belt. Maybe it's different for a Convertible or a Super Beetle, both of which mine is (also '71). I had a '70 sedan for years, and don't remember having this problem. |
