It is with great pleasure that I introduce my latest acqisition: A 1975 Single Cab that I have named Arándano, since it is originally from Mexico, it is blue, and I like the sound of "Arándano".

This is, of course, an unusual pickup in the US, being a '75. Although the dual-carbureted GD engine (clearly not original) needs work (it ran roughly when I bought it and does not run now), and there is much deferred maintenance to be attended to, the body is in remarkably good shape, with little rust to be found.

The M-codes are at the bottom of this posting, but it originally came with a number of neat features, including fog lights (gone, but the switch is still on the dash), rubber bumper inserts (gone), intermittent wipers (I have yet to confirm this), speedo in km/h with trip odometer (needs fixing), clock (needs fixing), and two treasure chest doors (all working from the same key!). It also has ambulance fans (one works), but these were not listed on the codes.

And, as a bonus (as if it needed more bonuses), I got the original PVC tilt from the previous previous owner, and it is in great condition. It also came with what he thought was a full setup of hoops, but in fact it is two pairs of the hoops, without the middle bow, the end hoop covers, or the wood stringers. So, that needs some work, but the critical parts are there.

I'm pretty jazzed about this one, and getting it running well and back to some of its former glory.

Randy: the tilt is the tent that covers the rear load area, obviously that one wasn't made from cotton canvas.

1. It's a tilt (fabric "tent" that covers the bed) made of a heavy fabric with, I guess, a lot of PVC in it. As BusDaddy surmised, this one is not cotton canvas, but a very heavy sort of rubberized fabric.
2. As of last week, you can fly right in Los Alamos (LAM), and sure -- you can come help me fix it. Then we can play.

Well, guys you all had your chance at this one. It was advertised on The Samba for some time. Long enough, even, for me to convince my wife that this one should not be passed up. And believe me, that took some convincing! :)

So, now i need to get this thing running again...

It died on the way home. Just lost power on the highway.

So, the diagnosis begins: I know I need fuel, air, and spark. I've checked the coil, and it is sparking. The little electric fuel pump makes noise with the key in the ON position, though it is doing a lot of clicking.

I suppose I need to see how much fuel it produces...

Any other diagnostic ideas? I'm not used to the carbureted contraptions.

Yup, check your pump first, along with the fuel filter. How fresh is the gas?
Engine just lost power, no kocking or bad sounds? Engine turns over ok? Does the oil light work correctly/got oil in there? All vacuum/brake hoses hooked up?

So... engine diagnostics...

I can see spark at the coil jumping to the main coil wire, so there is spark.

The fuel pump delivered 1 gallon of gas in 3 minutes, with no back pressure.

So it looks like there is fuel, too.

The engine turns over with the starter, but never makes a hint of catching. So I do not suspect a vacuum leak, else it would catch and die.

What else is there to check?

Could be a clogged jet, maybe clean the carb.

That's an idea, but there are two carbs, so you'd think that at least one of them would be working.

So, this would mean that there is fuel blockage inside the carbs themselves. But both suddenly at the same time? Hmm.
