| Lots of cutting and grinding. The more you dig the more metal you find needs to be replaced as well. Then you have to fit it with multiple clamps and spot welds. This was being done while laying on the floor and getting hot metal splattering all over the place. I'm 6'1'' so I'm kinda big to be rolling around welding the top hats to the rocker. |

What brand of inner and outer rockers did you use?
How was the fit? Did you need to re-work anything? |

Wolfsburgwest inner and outer rockers. The fit was perfect. WW's metal is really working well. The outer rocker had a very heavy shipping primer on it.
Every bus is different I would think. So the need to re-work pieces to fit is on a case by case basis right. If your not hitting the metal with the hammer and expect it fit perfectly, I would think you're not doing it right.
In all, WW inner and outer rockers are where it's at. Shipping within a week, quality pieces. We'll see how long it lasts. At least they seem to be out of the business of selling orange metal |

Started working on the drivers side inner and outer rockers.
Should have it done in a couple of weeks. Hard to get work done when you're by yourself. I was so lucky to have my brother helping me last week. Today I only got done in one day, what we did in 4hrs when I had help.
Keep moving forward! |

Dan,
I still have that box of extra bits for the bus, and a free transaxle.
You just gotta come get them.
I also have a pair of decent cab doors I bought recently, you might want to take a look see if they are better than the ones from your bus. I'll sell them at what I have in them.
Let me know. |

Well, with the government shutdown, I'm furloughed...and that gives me time to work on the bus.
Been spending a lot of time on the driver side rocker
Do not worry, I did more adjustments and the pillars are above the lower seam of the inner rocker.
Test fit rocker
After much grinding, fitting, more grinding, and more fitting, the rocker is welded in
More work to be done
Next will be grinding and more welding. Possibly more tweaking with the hammer, and then the thinnest layer of plastic to make it look super nice |

Finished up the front drivers side outrigger
Then I started to attack the corners with hammer and dolly, any tips?
Driver's side
Going to need to replace the lower corner of the passenger side and install a new battery tray. Any suggestions?
Next I need to prep the engine bay by wire wheeling/sanding and painting:
fix this, a little lose
And then figure out whats going on here
The govt shutdown is pretty fun so far  |

Well, I'd say after about 15 hours of work, the drivers side rocker panel is almost complete. Ground down the welds, and hit it with some primer.

Major progress on the '59 yesterday and today. Tore out the front and rear crossbeams, grind, ready to weld in new metal. Removed center pin from beam, ready for new center pin.
Cut out felt holders, and gas pedal hinge from old front floor, ready to weld onto the new floor.
Lastly, passenger side front outrigger was taken out and grind, ready for new metal. Next weekend, is welding!
I was too busy to take photo. More to come next weekend when I'm welding |

More cutting and grinding today. Almost ready or start welding in the four rear outriggers, front and rear cross beams, and passenger side front outrigger.
Nasty surprise when I took this outrigger off! Dirt in the shape of an outrigger. None of the other 5 had dirt filling the inside. The bus doesn't show any signs of being submerged in mud..
Test fit
Deadline is to have the underside ready in one month for transmission install |
