  View original topic: Vacuum timing advance

Hi All.

I just bought a 1966 912. Car runs strong, no smoke or leaking, etc. Engine bay is well kept, but not detailed. Crawling around it today, I noticed there is a vacuum nipple coming off the distributor that isn't attached to anything. I'm assuming this is for timing advance under throttle. I haven't found where this line should be connected - if it should be connected at all. Some of the phones I have seen online doesn't readily show this connector. Is this an easy one for someone to walk me through or do I need to post pictures?

Thanks,
Matt

A 1966 Porsche 912 should have a Bosch 0231 129 022 mechanical only distributor.

What's the part number on the distributor you have?

My money is on an 061.

IIRC the 061, with the vac disconnected, has advance curve like the 022 :)

Not quite... more like the 031 but still not as aggressive.

So I must have an aftermarket part. it doesn't have markings on it like those. Here is a photo:

Looks like a 061.

Numbers look like this:

I can't get to the back to see the serial # without taking it off. It does look like the one in the picture that has the vacuum nipple. Is there a vacuum line that should be attached to somewhere?

My 356A had a 050 Mechanical Advance Distributor on it as there were no vacuum ports on the carbs. I would check the advance curves your getting with a timing light and see how close they are to what it should be. What carbs do you have? This distributor if wrong or right and not hooked up could be making your car hard to start or make it run hot!

034 = 061?

Seems to me having the vacuum retard system not hooked up will have no affect on the starting of the car. Many people simply plug this port, right or wrong. This distributor was introduced on the US cars in '68 that were trying to meet the smog requirements.

so its a vacuum retard, not a vacuum advance? Car starts fine. What I was wondering was mid range and top end power to get from changes to the timing curve controlled by the vacuum.

But I'm an EFI guy, and this is my first go at cars with a distributor.
