The term "Jap" means different things to different people, and it has changed over time. At first it may have been merely an abbreviation, especially in the large headlines of the era. But during WWII it morphed into a derogatory term by GIs and the media, and remained as such for many decades since.

I called my sandals "flip-flops," but some neighbors called them "jap-flaps" and they meant it in a derogatory manner. There was a lot of resentment following the war, reignited again as Japanese cars surpassed American cars in popularity and quality, costing jobs and honor.

It takes some effort to avoid words and phrases that, although innocently uttered, can offend. I think we owe each other that little courtesy, and also we owe each other a little tolerance for habits that die hard.

Just ask Paula Dean. ;-)

Agreed.

We're all so deathly afraid of offending each other that we don't talk anymore. I think race relations were actually better when everyone COULD say the N word, for one example. You knew who the good guys were, and you knew who the crazies were. Most people were probably a little of both.

Paula Deen? Give me a break. Something like this was totally unexpected from a Southern belle with a brother named Bubba? Seriously???

When I was in high school, two of my best friends were a Korean kid and another Kraut. Those two were sidekicks, but they would race- bait each other mercilessly. Richard was "Hop- Sing" to Guy, and Guy was "Heine- Hitler- Nazi" to Richard. Car rides with these two were something else. They were always pulling stunts with each other that nearly resulted in accidents. Richard would accuse Guy of pumping the exhaust gases back into the passenger compartment, and Guy would accuse Richard of "driving while gook"... on and on and on. They were both absolute maniacs, and lots of fun. It was like a real- life Blazing Saddles- the OG uncut version.

Wonder if they could still be best friends if they just met today, or if they'd just keep to themselves?

So... lowslowauto... see what you've done? now go stand in the corner and think about this.

It's a shame our society has regressed to where cable companies won't show the uncensored Blazing Saddles. We have dumbed down moviegoing until satire is not acceptable anymore. The whole point of their overuse of the N-word to desensitize and ridicule those who used it was apparently lost on the suits.

So did you get anywhere with this car?

lowslowauto Sat Jul 27, 2013 6:47 am

Wow this thread really went sideways (meant entirely from a point of direction with no racial connotation ;) )

Back to the vehicle...I have not made it back to the car in order to do the items you all described! Unfortunately I am a poor sucker that works Tuesday through Saturday. I did check if the distributor somehow came out, but it didnt and since I never loosened it, I was not surprised.

Plus I got some of my regular maintenenace bits from CIP in the mail yesterday, so it looks like Sunday (as long as the honey do list can be ignored) and Monday will be type 3 day.

On the list to check:
-Properly gap the points
-Change all air hoses (do these NEED to be fuel injection strength?) Thats what I have done in the past but our CRAPPY (Canadian) tire carries smaller lengths so it can get pricey.
-Check the plugs
-Oil Change (replace all of the "OLD"gaskets
-possibly replace condensor
-Replace rotten heat exchangers with J tubes (still need more info on this)

After that I should know more...I will keep it up to date with what I find! Thanks for all of the help, sorry for the delayed response!

A bad idea to remove the heater from an automobile. Nothing worse than riding in a cold car! A WTB ad will get good used heater boxes shipped to you or weld up the ones you have. My wife had a fit, when she realized I had heat but her cable was broken!

Spent some time on it today. Adjusted the points at the highest point to the 0.016 inch recommendation. This also did not get the car started! It turns over but does not get started.

Unless in missing something simple that can happen when you swap the points I'm completely stumped. Crappy bday present!

Make sure the rotor is turning.
Make sure you're getting spark.

The rotor is turning, so next ill be checking spark

Adjusted the points again, properly this time. And it is running better than before but a small low idle backfire. I'm guessing air leak somewhere. Where's a good spot to pick up large lengths of rubber line? Thanks for the help!
