When looking at the order of the fuses, compared to the photo below.
Does number one fuse on the chart start left "drivers side", to right, like looking up under the dash? If that made sense?
I am asking because when I blew a fuse yesterday while working on it..
"my fault", the front turn signals and parking lights were out, and it was on number one fuse, clear to the left "drivers side", while looking up at the fuse panel under the dash.
But..... my warning lights and fuel gauge were still on, and they went out when I removed the last fuse to the right number 12?
I have a 1972 Standard

sounds like someone didn't like the way Germans wired things. By parking lights I'm assuming rear tail lights and the two flashers. It sounds like someone wired the flashers correctly but put the right and left tail light one 1 as well and moved speedo and fuel gauge to 12.

Yes,

AS WIRED FROM THE FACTORY #1 is the the left side of the car.

That being said, it's been multiple decades and multiple owners, The wiring may have been rearranged by a PO at some point.

Sorry. I should have put that down. I was puttinv on a mexican bumper. It was the front signals. Seems like someone rotated some wires around. I dont know if I should start changing them back or leave them alone. The fuses blew due to me messing around.

Leave them alone. The #1 & #12 fuses seem wired right from this '72 standard diagram -

Your fusebox diagram in first post seem to not be right for your car.

Oh I see whaf you mean. Thank you very much!!
I was trying to make sure my fuses were right. Which ones were 8&16 amps. I think I better double check. I put them in according to the diagram.

THe above diagram is when looking at the trunk side of the fuse box where all the wiring is not the fuse side, which was really dumb on VWs part as you dont look at that side when replacing fuses.

If you look at the fuse side in the interior of the car it will be opposite way around to the diagram as you already found out.

I'd say it was just a misprint in the manual as VW didnt change the 70s fuse lay out, heres a correct one

The original VW fuse box diagram for '71-'72 is wrong! :o
Here is the (incorrect) VW diagram from the Wiring Diagrams section on this site:

The give away is the headlight fuses. Since the beginning of the late model body style ( '68 ) the headlights have always been fuses 3 thru 6. The full wiring diagram correctly shows them connected to these fuses.

Kabasue updated the fuse box diagram and corrected for the fuse placement. He also added the proper fuse color and created a inverted diagram that can be posted in the trunk for reference :

Excellent! I need to print these out. Mine is a 6-72. I imagine the 71 are the same
