Thanks for the quick response Gerson. Not a big deal...I expect to "tweak". What I heard was that you were aware of this in the past and tried to correct it, but it still only works for some folks...not all. I figured there might have been changes at the factory even.

When I removed the column I simply raised the bus to the max. height of my floor jack. Now I've got 4" of lumber in addition and still can't get it to angle in. My only assumption (maybe I'm wrong) is the placement of the hole, or maybe it's still the size of the opening. Like I said, the hole in the floor was 30mm and the column is 32mm. Even opening it more might help...it's so close.

I have about 5 og floors at the shop, we are going the check the our patterns against the og floors and try to find out what the hell is going on....

we just found the problem, one of my fucking "ex" employees finished a run of 5 sets of front floors with the steering hole at 30mm instead of 40mm, he was too lazy to change the punch on the machine, from 30mm to 40mm, the location of the hole is correct....

Great relief. You have my address Gerson. What time will you be here tomorrow with your drill in hand?

How do you take your coffee?

He said it was punched, just make a fist with a 40mm diameter and hit it as hard as you can.

Protips:
Put your hand in a vinyl glove first and wrap it in duct tape so that it holds the correct shape.
Don't forget to compensate your hand diameter for the 1-2mm of glove and tape thickness.

Funny. Guess I'll go the Dremel route and just hog it out another 8mm, or whatever it takes.

Took me awhile because the girlfriend was off all week, so it was hiking with her and the Carolina dog instead of wrenching on the turd. Gerson was correct...the hole was properly placed. Once I reamed it out the column went in correctly. I expect all my future Funky Green panels (there will be many in the Spring) to be DEEPLY discounted to compensate for my pain and suffering.

Girlfriend can't accept my "nice" floor surrounded by "patina". LMAO.

Looks great! Hey what is that switch for on the speedo housing? I just have the hole.

Thanks

I believe, nice dad, that since yours is a single cab, you'll have a little block off insert in that switch location.

Nice. I just started cutting out my front floor on my '67 westy this past weekend. This certainly helps.

Got my steering column back in today, and my brake pedal. Clutch and shifter tomorrow...might even be driving tomorrow! This is one huge job!

Excellent job.

The ordeal is over...just installed the shifter and drove down the road! I enjoyed the experience, but once is enough. I'll never buy a bus again with a totally rotten floor, lower A-pillars, and forward dog legs...that's a deal breaker for this old man.

I call your bluff. Its like alegator wrestling. If you survive the first one, you are an expert.

Cheers and thanks for the DIY. This should be a sticky if not already.

Congrats Ken. Whatever your next undertaking is with it, it'll seem like a day in the park compared to all that.

kenshapiro2002 Thu Oct 31, 2013 10:33 am

Absolutely. I'm very ready to move on to the "Turd's" other areas of need.
