Hi,
Just rebuilt my 1976 Baywindow type 4 motor & got my automatic transmission overhauled.
Anyway all back together but only have drive in 1st & reverse gear. You can move in 1st gear & then select drive & it will go in & it will shift up !
Any help would be great . . .
Thanks RP

I'm a little confused by your grammar...you say it will only drive in 1st and Reverse, and you also say it will shift up when you put it in Drive. So what's the problem?

Are you saying it won't shift when you think it should, or is it not shifting automatically...or what? :?

I will offer (if it helps) that when I reinstalled my 003 automatic after rebuilding it, I had a little trouble with the shift linkage being out of adjustment. I had two Reverse positions, and by adjusting the setting on the connection on the transmission, I then had two Neutral positions. It can be adjusted quite easily.

Hi,
Their is only drive in 1st & reverse, no drive in 2nd & D for drive !
But you can change from 1st to drive while moving & when you come to a stop nothing in drive, so back to 1st to move forward.
Some adjustment is needed I think !
Thanks RP

Sounds like a valve body problem to me. Can't tell you what to look for though, except maybe pull the valve body and make sure the balls are in their correct positions. Assuming you had a shop do the rebuild though, this should be theirs to fix.

I'm sorry I cannot help, but there is an Automatic Transmission Troubleshooting guide for technicians posted here on the Samba. Search for that, it is in two parts.

Also, like Wildthings said, the rebuilder is responsibel for doing it right.

You might also try to contact oldDKPdriver on the Samba, he helped me via email with my transmission questions.
