Hello all! New to the VW experience but not new to getting my hands dirty with vehicles. I have tried to look up the question in regards to the heating system thru several pages of the forum along with searches but nothing is really answering the question. Any direction would be helpful.
The 65 I got needs some help and for what I plan on doing to it heat is not something I need or want in this vehicle. Just want to know if the heater boxes and cables are removed from the vehicle is there any repercussion to doing this. I do see that I will need to look at a different exhaust set up along with sealing some holes but in all honesty I want it out of the equation if possible. It is not working now and has not for many years after getting under the vehicle and looking at it.
This is a great forum! I have had many questions answered with out having to post and I am grateful everyone is here and extremely helpful.
Thank you |

All you need to do is replace your heat exchangers with J tubes. Just a FYI Hawaii is the only state that does not require a heater/defroster legally in a car although most people aren't familiar with the DOT law. |

Thank you for the timely response. "J" tubes it is.
however with j tubes you should make some under engine sheet metal parts to keep the heat of the j pipes from radiating onto the the engine, heads, cylinders pushrod tubes.
the stock heater boxes effectivly shield the underside of motor from this heat at they always have fan driven air cooling them, even when heat is turned off.
removal of the heater boxes also removes a mounting point for the sled tins under the motor, which serve as protection for the fragile push rod tubes from road debris. You need to correct for this when using j tubes. some work with tin snips and sheet metal from the hardware store can be done to make acceptable heat sheilds and debris protective shields.
good luck
