Well... I'm back.

After a brief hiatus into the Type 2 world (with the 68 Westy linked in my signature) I've bought a new Squareback. I bought the car up in Sacramento and drove it down Highway 1 back home to Orange County over the holiday weekend - it ran beautifully. This one is a 69 and is in great shape. I don't have the best pictures at the moment but will get more as soon as I can. The car has OG paint and some cool accessories. I'll be changing some things to make it more my style, but for now it runs and drives awesome and looks great.

Quick question to all - I have some serious vertical play in my steering column. I can hold the wheel and move it (along with the column/ignition area) pretty significantly up and down. Both hex bolts at the telescoping connection are tight, but the assembly is telescoped all the way out.

How can I tighten up this play?

Here are some more pictures/info on the car.

all OG savannah beige paint
1641cc w/42DCNF webers
fully powdercoated tins
3" narrowed punch drunk customs beam
CIP1 cosmics
VDO tach
full circle horn ring
front & rear gravel guards
pedro's rack with teak slats
hull camping hinges

i removed almost all of the stickers the PO had put on the car - they just weren't my style. I also replaced the simpson racing harnesses he had in the car with some red lap belts to help brighten up the all black interior.

the car has some serious rake, i plan on lowering the back a bit more to even it out.







for reference, here's how the car looked when i got it (there were even more stickers on it than in this picture)



the checkerboard vinyl bra has been removed as well.

the PO installed some cool, functional, and funky accessories. the car has a 16v antenna that i plan on either replacing with a stock unit or finding a stubbier antenna. he installed LED bulbs for the gauges which is pretty nice at night.




the engine is super clean and dialed - i'm not going to mess with anything here



short term plans are to get some tan coco mats for the front to finish up the interior. I also want to get the car lowered more in the rear and maybe a touch more in the front. i'll eventually replace the cal window rubber with grooved rubber and trim, but the cal seals are in pretty good shape. long term there are some dents here and there i'd like to have worked out - but otherwise, the car is solid and drives great!

If you're thinking about a stubbier antenna for the roof, check out the antennas from Honda S2000's.

OhHerrooo, really nice and clean square there. I have those LEDs in my gauges and they help. I noticed your engine bay had a donut hanger on the fan shroud but there seems to be nothing supporting the weight of the engine aside from the bolts holding it in place. I don't see a engine hanger bar traversing the length of the engine bay between the case and shroud. If it's there, cool. I'm not sure if that's a cause for concern. Just an observation while admiring the enigne bay. I'm sure some of the more seasoned enthusiast could chime in on that. Sure is a nice car. Congrats again.

I think it's right behind the hose coming off the fan shroud. It's a weird angle.

You need to put it back to FI. That's the rule... you either do the damn car right or you have to give it to me.

Yep it's there - it was just a bad angle. And Tram - I know I know but the car runs great. I just want to leave it as is.

Do Gasburners have less offset than cosmics?

Replacing the steering coupler - remove the gas tank to get at it from the top?

the previous owner had a large german badge where the VW hood badge had been. unfortunately, he drilled two large holes into the hood in order to mount this badge.

with a VW badge on, the holes were still clearly visible. so, I bought a sheet of vinyl (for $6) in a similar color and cut out a small circle to put under my VW badge but over the holes. I know the color is a few shades off, but from a few feet away it is pretty tough to notice.

I'm happy with the results and still have a bunch of vinyl left.

Hate to think what you had to pay for it but that is ONE NICE CAR! 8)

(You could put a couple of small red LED's in those 2 holes in the hood and maybe make it look like the car was snorting fire!) :D

been a while without any updates. my battery was draining every few days. found out it was because the radio was wired directly to it. i need to get under here and do some more detective work. the radio wiring harness has since been disconnected and the car starts every time.

it was my birthday on 4/7 and i got some over the tunnel tan/beige coco mats. really like how they look with my almost all black interior. i just need to get the damn sticky tape off my glovebox door the PO used for his dash plaques.



also been having some issues with my repro OEM tach. whenever i rev, no matter what gear i'm in, the tach will stick at 3k RPM. is this due to a bad ground? bad connection to the coil? or something else?



also, I really want to level out my car by lowering the back but my 205/65 tires seem to be contributing to my stink-bugedness. would a smaller tire help with this? also, since the car is IRS i can't go short axle, can i? what is the best way to lower the rear and even it out? the tires are very close to rubbing the inner fender lip.
