| Hi I'm new to the bug community, I heard a VW the other day that sounded just like a Subaru WRX STI. Does anyone know which kind of exhaust that is? I'd really like to install that on my bug. I have a 1970 Bug, 1600cc. |

| That bug probably had a Subaru boxer swapped in. It's a fairly popular swap but it is a massive project. There's no way you're going to get a stock motor to sound that way. Just enjoy the sound of air-cooled goodness. :) |

| Hmm I spoke to my VW mechanic yesterday. He said all you need to do is remove the heater box and install some exhaust that he carries at his shop and it should produce a similar sound. I'm gonna ask him about what you said. |

You can, it just takes a header with unequal length runners, which is exactly what Subis have that gives them that distinctive note.
Put equal length headers on a Subi and they lose that rumble.
I made up an unequal length header for my old VW engine years ago, not for the sound but because a regular 4 into 1 header wouldnt clear my Supercharger pulley setup.
It had that same boxer note but it didn't flow as well being unequal length. |

| So will it change the engine performance in a bad way? |

Yeah, headers are created with equal length runners for good reason.
I noticed a huge difference in mine once I modified the belt drive setup so my 4into1 quiet pack fit back on |

Ive noticed that my Eurosport twin tip exhaust has sound fo a subi after a little while of running it. Doesnty have the same tone as the stock exhaust system yet in certain parts of the rpm range it sounds like a subi. I know im running about 90 dB on the highway which is decently loud, least to me it is for being stock.
This is the link for it: http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C13-3418
I like it. |

| That's the exhaust my mechanic recommended! I think I'm gonna end up buying that same exhaust! |

| They've got an unequal length design aswell which is why they have that note |

| I'll be the first one to ask...if you want your car to sound like it's underwater (Scooby sound) why don't you just buy a Subaru and be done with it??? |
