From the people who brought you the 2011 Type 3 50th anniversary California Central Coast weekend, it's… The 2014 Type 3 Rally!

This time Tom Reay and I are thinking about something that's a little more of a rally than a caravan/cruise. It’s going to take place in and around Cayucos, CA the weekend after the 2014 Solvang VW Veteranentreffen, the not-to-be-missed vintage VW event hosted every two years by the Golden Gate Chapter of the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America in Danish-themed Solvang, California. The rally will begin on the Friday following the Solvang show, and we will plan Type 3 events in the Cayucos area on Saturday and on Sunday morning. We're talking a whole Type 3 weekend!

The rally route is still being discussed, but expect a scenic, twisty drive along the ocean and through the foothills and mountains along the central coast.

For anyone who enjoyed the 50th anniversary Type 3 weekend, or wishes in hindsight that they had gone, this is your chance to participate in the sequel! All Type 3s are welcome to join — early or late, stock or custom, show cars and hoopties, Notchbacks, Squarebacks, Fastbacks, Type 34s…even SP2s.

We'll be updating everyone on event plans as they firm up, but for now just mark your 2014 calendar to hold open October 3-5.

And always remember: safety third!

Scott - sounds like the perfect event. I'll plan on attending for sure and if anyone else from the PNW wants to join, I'll be heading down the coast route at least one direction if not both ways. Alex and I did the coast route last time we went to The Classic and vowed never to take I-5 again (unless time dictates). Thanks to you and Tom for putting this together.

I am getting my '71 fasty all cleaned up inside and out, and have a few mechanical issues to improve (front end and muffler), but should be ready in time for the event. I'll be coming up from Ventura County.

This could be fun. Maybe I can make it.

I'd really love to make the Invasion, too, and make a little side trip to my old stamping grounds in Brooklyn after, but I don't think I can spare the time at this point.

Now this sounds like a perfect excuse for making a long road trip in Jill's Type 34 Ghia. Perfect timing too since the Invasion is a short trip for us next year.

Will pencil it in on the calendar and be watching this thread.

Cool.

I guess...you people are alright.

*EDIT* Since you are inviting us custom/lowered people, I hope you take that into account when you plan the routes for the rally. That mountain road WAS beautiful last time, but it was a pain in the ass to navigate.

I had a blast taking my lowered car on those roads, I'd like to think it was the asphalt that had a bad time. I even brought some of it home with me.

Well, I know what I need to do quicker than I thought... Buy a new type3

No problem -- we've given you a whole year to raise it back up!

...but seriously, the routes we're looking at this time are more substantial roads that are much smoother. No potholes large enough to eat a VW this time.

Well, not large enough to eat a Type 3, but Type 1s......that's one reason not to invite them..

When I see rally I think of competetive events (like Time and Distance or "Monte Carlo") is it a timed event or just driving around?

KTPhil Mon Sep 23, 2013 12:21 pm

It's a timed event... as in be sure to arrive at Miller Time!

It's going to be somewhere in between -- a rally in the sense that it will have an established route and a definite start time, interval time(s), and end time (or "Miller time," as Phil suggests), but not scored for accuracy or anything. It won't be competitive. We might start people off at intervals to avoid slow-moving clumps of cars -- what it's not going to be is one long caravan of VWs that crawls along and stops often for photo ops. We want this to be a driving event, not a traffic jam!

Thismight be a show i can make then, guess this winter will be more of me getting my square back on the road. Time to clear some room in the garage for it I guess.

ibjack Mon Sep 23, 2013 1:00 pm

I'm in and will bring some "co navigators" to help.

Jason37 Mon Sep 23, 2013 2:46 pm

As if I needed another reason to get my car finished. Hmmm 3000 mile shakedown run. Sounds fun.

chaosisme Mon Sep 23, 2013 7:40 pm

Count me in.

I have exactly ONE YEAR to make this happen. As the self-appointed safety officer, I will do my best to be there with my helmet.

Thanks for the great response so far everyone -- this could turn out to be quite a memorable event! We'll keep you posted as plans take shape.

I'll pick you up on the way.
