I have a another back up original sender with a screw on terminal in my stash somewhere, I’ll post up a picture once I find it.

Do you have the correct length sender Dave, it should measure 280mm.

My old sender displayed the same symptoms i.e. never registered anything more than just over half full. Measured it and it and found it was a 185mm short sender. ](*,)

Here are some images of one I took apart. If the wire you ordered works let us know where you purchased it from, as I have one that need to be repaired too.

Hope these help. If you need more images let me know.

Hi Loren

Yes, my sending unit is the correct length. Thank you very much for the photos. They'll help a lot as I try to rebuild this.

As for the wire, I will send you some as I had to buy 25' and I certainly won't need that much - I hope. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I hit send too soon. I noticed that my sending unit is 21 30 10.58 whereas yours is 21 30 3.58, I wonder what the numbers mean. I'm thinking the 10 58 referee to the date of production (my car was built in 11/58 ) but not sure about the 21 30.

Also, do you have a sense of what holds the bolt in place.I can't tell from the photos. Was it simply floating in there or attached somehow to the wall?

Thanks

Dave

I don't know what the 21/30 stands for, but the 3.58 is the date code (March 1958) and it will usually precede the build date of the car by a month or two. The bold just hangs in place by the wire and is firmly attached to the top plate when the nut is installed. If you need parts or another sending unit base PM me know and I will see what I have available.

Hi

I managed to take the small winders apart - talk about small.

You can see the winders, the set screws and a small pin that sits in the end. I used a small amount of heat and gently worked away at them - took a while. Now when the new wire comes we'll see if I can re-assembled it to a working fuel spending unit.

Og top, slightly early model for 11-55 car. Washers are wrong and the other wire is just sitting there for storage. Here is link to the vdo install instructions that shows a photo of the same terminal with plastic shield https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/techbulletins/k3.php
and the 57-59 instructions... https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/techbulletins/k8.php

Hi Folks
I have a couple of updates. First, my new wire arrived today - 100'. I wonder if I'll need all of it.

So I set up a test on the bench. The wire is so thin it's a challenge to work with.

The peg to which the wire to the fuel guage is attached is busted off. Here are a two pics, one from each side of the plastic base. I need to know the size of the peg, bolt, and I assume there are 2 nuts, one to hold the peg to the top of the guage and one to hold the wire. I couldn't tell from the photos nor the spec sheets.

I'll have to try and drill out the material and see whether I can fashion a new one. And looking at the pics you sent, there is a plastic "boot" that must serve to isolate the peg from the top of the guage. I guess I'll have to make something as I don't have one unless someone out there has one to offer.

So, some progress I guess. We'll see how the next step goes.

Hi Folks

Big day today - I've put some insurance on the Ghia and can now legally drive it on the road.

It certainly needs an alignment. The steering is bit goofy. But nonetheless I had a nice time driving around our neighbourhood, even getting it into 3rd gear, albeit briefly. I'll put the hubcaps on after the alignment.

Good morning

I'm getting close to the final product. Installed the door panels yesterday - they look pretty darn good I think. Alignment is set for Monday so then maybe I can finally drive this Ghia on the street.

The door panels look fantastic. This is such a great color combination!!

Yep, that combination is killer 8)

It looks like you got a new Karmann Ghia!

Howdy Folks

Well, I think that it's done.

Of course not - the alignment shop told me that I need to replace the steering box and on the drive home I could see why, as the car continued to want to find its own line on the drive. But overall, I am pleased with the results.

Many thanks to all of you who have helped me along the way and shared in this build thread. Now I'll look for another project. Take care all.

Congrats.
As to the box check both adjustments as per Bentley. After adjusted perfectly it will still feel like it wants to wander until you get accustomed to it.
TRW just quit making boxes and those out of the box weren't great.
Adjust it and have fun driving.

Sharp looking car, enjoy.
