My driver's door will no longer stay in open position on miled inclines or in a slight breeze like the passenger one does. It goes past the "clicky" spot (sorry for the crappy terminology) that would normaly hold it in open position, but this functionality seems to be worn out on the driver's side. This "clicky" spot still works on passenger side to hold door open in these conditions.

I hope I am being clear.... :roll:

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to repair?

Hi,

Your door check strap might be broken, or perhaps the "pinch" mechanism is shot.

In any case, pull the door panel and have a look. I replaced the check strap on my drivers side door, posted some pics here

Alistair I appreciate the link and pics. As usual you are very helpful.

I understand better how the strap works now. I believe that a closer inspection of the rubber bits that work to hold the door on the other side of the "swollen" part of the strap is in order.

Hi,

Yes, have a look at the rubbers. You'll see that they are faced with metal. I wondered if the pinch effect could be increased, but I couldn't see a way. Not that there is no way, I probably gave up too soon as I had a spare check strap and I just got on with things :)

Come to think of it now, perhaps spreading the swelling on the check strap would work?

Hi all.

I'm working on an assumption here but I suspect the rubber bits, or metal on them, on the door strap have worn; door won't stay open.

Has anyone tried running a bead(s) of weld on the first set of bumps on the strap?

My thought is that spreading the strap *might* make the strap a little shorter, thus limiting how far door opens?
