Well here it goes... i've read every 34 ICT post on the samba with minimal success. I have a 72 square DP, was FI but converted to carbs back in 07 when i was 21 and didnt know what my mechanic was even talking about. He left the original F.I. high pressure pump in and also put a brass restrictor in the return line, the car ran fine for over a year (i dont know how after reading everything on here) then the oil leaks began. I would pull up at a stop light and a cloud of white smoke would catch up with me, so i parked the car at my family house the past 3 years. Almost 2 years ago i began work on her, dropped the engine, cleaned everything up, new seals and re-installed. Also since then i've installed a new facet low pressure pump and regulator and eliminated the return line, the car would start and only run when i was pumping the gas. I've read the redline weber instructions and the aircooled.net how to dial in dual carbs but the car wont idle, unless the speed screws are turned in 5-6 times. I Pm'd one of the saints on this site bob notch and he recommended new jets. I've put in 60 idles and 130 mains and also new gaskets and needle and seats. It still only idles when speed screws are turned in 5-6 times, idle screws backed out 2x and i get black smoke when it starts to die. Today i was off work and played with it some more, i noticed gas ontop of my butterfly valves. I adjusted my floats and let it sit while i got lunch, came back and no more gas on top of the valves. Great i thought, maybe i was flooding my engine. I turned it on and it fired right up (speed screws still turned in a 6x, wicked high idle) then i attempted to adjust them a quarter turn at a time. About half a turn back and no noticible idle difference, another quarter turn on both and the idle drops significantly, i see black smoke coming out the exhaust and it dies......FML!!! Am i still flooding my carbs? one of my carbs? I have the linkage disengaged per other posts, it does have a balance tube between the manifolds. Any ideas what my first step should be? I have the SK snail gauge for measuring my airflow on each carb, when it is idling its peaked. Its getting real nice here in AZ and i would love to drive it this winter so i can give my motorcycle a break.

Pull the floats and check that they are good. Pin holes will sink them. Shake them and listen for gas, put them in a bucket and look for bubbles. Clean the jets again. Replace you fuel filter, but see if its full of junk. Maybe try running it from a fuel can instead of the tank. It's process of elimination, so eliminate as you work on it. The facts that it ran means you have spark and cmpression, and good enough timing to get it to run, so you are 75% ahead

Hi, I run both my type 4's with 34 ICT webers, and have no problem at all.
You must get rid of the high pressure pump
Get a low pressure electric pump.
Fit (73801) 145 main jets and (74409.55) 1080.55ICT idle jets.
You can order them from Eurocarb.UK

See Low pressure pump and shutoff valve

Both run perfect, and have buckets full of power.

Whats even nicer, is that they economical as well.

Have fun

what is your fuel pressure?

Tee a pressure gauge on the fuel line and see what you have while running and after shutdown. if the fuel line is getting hot on shutdown it will show on the gauge and can spike the pressure. Which will push the fuel past the floats and flood it.
too much fuel pressure while running will do the same to the floats.
