I've been doing some research about what I'll have to go through to get a Brazilian Gol to California. One of the toughest things is going to be getting it to pass California emissions. It doesn't seem to hard to actually get the car in my possession, but it's gonna be a lot of work to figure out how to get it registered.
Another thing that I've been thinking about is if I couldn't get it to pass smog legally, would there be another way, like changing the VIN# to something that doesn't have to be smogged, like a 74 Golf. Another way might be to apply to make it a kit car somehow. I know a place where I can pay to have my car pass smog. Maybe it's just as simple as bringing it back there every year.
Anyways, I want one. I want to drop the stock engine and trans, send the trans to Rancho for upgrades, build a Type 1 monster engine with IDAs and a Porsche shroud, and swap out the wheels and tires for Erco star pattern wheels. Maybe some 15x6s in the front with a street drag radial and some 15x4s and Nankangs for the rear. I'd have a header builder make me something custom for the car. I feel like it would be a hit at car shows and the drags.
Anyone have any advise where to find out info, or who to talk to about bringing the car here or getting it registered? Any ideas or comments would be appreciated.
