I believe BRANDEN HOY was the owner of one of the bugs and Eric L. the other. Do a user search for Branden and send him a PM. |

No narrowed beams back then. They were just starting to come around back when I was driving that car. I miss it. It's the one car that I sold that I wish I'd have kept.
Nothing was repopped back then either so we had to hunt for our parts and accessories. TheSamba didn't exist, and the internet was just a place where you went to talk crap to people around the world in Chatrooms.
That car was a 62 body on a 66 pan with some pulled springs up front and a click in the back. 5 original Rader wheels and a whole bunch of accessories. I grew up loving old road rally cars and wanted that kinda look. Back then, that's what Eric and I called it, "Rally Look". Our cars were different than everything else out here in Phoenix. I drove that car every day. It was all I had. I did all of my own work and just did whatever I could to keep driving. VWs were my life. Every show, swap or get together, we were there. We were at Pomona every 6 weeks hunting and selling. Looking at the very few pics I have of that car, I guess they would have been something similar to an "outlaw" Porsche but in the VW world. There was no niche for us.
The lenses were smoked plexi under the headlight guards. I ran a 1776 with dual Solex P-11's for a long time then switched to some Dellorto 40s. That motor is still in my friend's 60 ragtop now. Those were some good times back then.
It's cool that you are going to run with that look. It's been a long time since I've seen it done. I used to see primered and striped cars all the time, but never numbered and never accessorized. post up some pix of your car. I'd like to see how it's coming along. |
