this may be a stupid question (i'm a newbie) but are all gear shift knobs universal in size?

SteveVanB Tue Nov 12, 2013 8:37 am

no. I've seen some as big as grapefruits and some as small as squirrel skulls.

seanjenn Tue Nov 12, 2013 8:44 am

Are you talking about the threaded bit, inside the knob?
No, not the same.
Which reminds me of the sweet Hurst shift knob I've got out in the garage....
Anybody know what size the threads are on the top of the shifter?

SteveVanB Tue Nov 12, 2013 8:47 am

14x1.5. Same as your lug bolts/nuts

seanjenn Tue Nov 12, 2013 8:54 am

Bitchin. Thanks dood, and love the bigfoot gas pedal on your ride, didn't think those would fit a Vanagon. Now I gotta have one!

ratdogfreak Tue Nov 12, 2013 8:58 am

yeah sorry i wasn;t specific enough, i was talking about the thread size. thanks for the info.

Damn, I always wanted a grapfruit shifter knob or perhaps The Deathstar!

zippyslug31 Tue Nov 12, 2013 9:27 am

Me, I always wanted a squirrel skull.

I've been thinking of getting one of these...

Always nice to have that little bit extra storage space

If there is enough space in there to store a squirrels head it might be worth $ 45.00 otherwise its a waste of money.

Yeah I liked it too, but you know it cost them about $2.00 from China. It would be neat if it was deep enough to hold a spare key.

I'm thinking about buying this wooden shift knob from Van Cafe... $19.

GW has a 5-speed shift knob (new) for $15

An "8-ball" knob from GW, $20:

The early vanagons had a smaller diameter shift rod.

Onemat's passenger: "Oh no, we locked the keys in the van!"
Onemat: "Never fear... I stashed a spare key stored safely in the... uhm... wait.... shit."

GW used to carry a leather blue and white shift knob like this:

Anyone know where one might acquire more? I bought this back in 2001 approximately.

I saved a similar knob with the Wolfsburg crest from my old Beetle in the event that I ever bought another VW that it would work on. Little did I know that 20 years later I would purchase... an automatic Vanagon.

Try the air-cooled parts suppliers.

Here is my favorite......

I took an '84 GTi golf ball knob and a used casting resin to inlay a pin from a 1920's Flint car.

SteveVanB Tue Nov 12, 2013 3:00 pm

I currently have a piston from a Stihl weedwacker. Got rid of the squirrel skull
