View original topic: Original Padding Used for Different Seats in Different Years
Riff Raff Sun Jan 12, 2014 2:27 pm

There is extensive discussion on both frames and upholstery of bus seats, but no comprehensive documentation of the different padding originally used on different seats in different years.
I am aware that both foam and coconut padding is available new, but I am wondering what kind of padding was used originally??

Was all middle seat padding cotton batting, or did coconut pads get used later?

Do all front and rear seats have coconut padding, or were they cotton batting earlier??

Other changes? Differences?

I'll kick it off by posting this from seat break down:

Barndoors:
All padding on the bottom and backrest. No coconut usage.

55-67 bottoms:
AFAIK all had coconut on the bottom + thin layer of cotton.
My '61 definitely did.

55-up back rests:
55-60 back rests are all cotton - no coconut pad.
61-62 Hump seat back rests - coconut pad + thin layer of padding
1/3 2/3 - coconut + thin layer of padding
Walk-through back rests:
Driver's side - coconut+ thin layer of padding
Passenger side - padding only, no coconut

Corrections/additional welcome

Check this crazy find..

I'm sure this is a "58 only" front top bench seat. Caramel cover, dark brown pipping. No coco puffs :( .Only 2 rear supporting bars at the back of seat vs 4.

Cool, yes, it is 58 only because the shape and the color scheme.

That is normal for a 58-early 61 seat.

Glue or no glue between layers? I see lots of folks gluing the burlap to the coconut, and the batting on top to the coconut, but from what little I had left of the original, I don’t think it was glued. 1964 Kombi split bench.
