Fish, at present there are no plans to "race" it at the salt. The body will be bare, brushed aluminum, and of course, there would be a great concern with corrosion. So at this point regarding Bonneville, display only.
But we can dream...............................

INTRODUCTION:
A crew of four North Carolina craftsmen have been building the body, chassis and engine for what is a recreation of the most beautiful Volkswagen ever crafted, the infamous 1939 Volkswagen KDF Type 64 (aka Type 60K10) Berlin to Rome racer.
This very special project began almost three years ago and is now 80% complete. The chassis is rolling and the front and rear windows were recently fitted.
The car will compete in the 36hp Challenge Unlimited 36 category and the teams goal is to capture the fifty one year old record of Dick Beiths Pepco supercharged belly tank racer (aka lakester). Minimum speed goal is 130 miles per hour against the 51 year old record of 129.68 miles per hour.
Wolfsburg Wests Okrasa style heads will be part of the potent big bore 36hp engine being developed to meet and then exceed their goals. Our "1" Club hats are off to Bruce, Dave, Whitey and Elbert.
UPDATE:
It has been a couple of months since we first introduced the Type 64 project being crafted in North Carolina for the 36hp Challenge. Below are some new photos showing the progress to date. The world is watching as this team continues to create a very special reproduction of the 1938 Volkswagen Type 64.
Stay tuned to these pages for more updates and photos as they become available. For more info about this Type 64 and the VW Challenge go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/36hpvw.challenge and "Friend" the 36hp VW Challenge.
Lookin' good fellas......................

Creating a T64 from scratch is an expensive and time consuming process. Here is the latest photo from Bruce Cook and his crew showing the car is now resting on the chassis, windows and frames installed. Plans are to have the car ready to race in 2015 and take it to a ECTA meet in Ohio for preliminary test and tuning. And hopefully set a new 36hp Challenge Unlimited top speed record.
Stay tuned for more photos as the project proceeds...........................

Axel, I will post all the photos they release to me as they arrive. The team is currently working on the inner body support structures that will mate to the chassis.
Keep looking here for bi-monthly updates (or sooner?).

John, it all goes well, they hope to have the T64 ready to run at the ECTA meet in June in Ohio. Even thought the car is 80% complete, the next 20% will be all of the small time consuming items. And because this car is so special, they will not let themselves get rushed. The devil is in the details and we must also remember there is a very special 36hp engine being created. It will be a HIGHLY modified Wolfsburg West outfitted engine with a top speed goal above 130 miles per hour.
Thanx for your interest..........................

Hey Burly,
wonderful build diary, thanks for sharing info, posting up pictures, and for 'doing that voodoo that you do so well'
I have a couple questions:
1) One of the articles I read about this build says it was commissioned by Bruce Cook. Is this the same Bruce Cook, course marshal, race steward, from SCTA? If so, I had no idea he was a VW guy! (It shouldn't surprise me, because all the cool kids are VW guys, lol!)
2) Can you share a little more about the '130mph+ hopeful', Wolfsburg West/Okrassa headed 36hp powerplant they have planned for this car? I assume blown, do you know if they will be using a vane-type Judson, roots-type Pepco, (Pepco repro), centrifugal-type Scrorock, or other vintage supercharger? |

Tom, the Bruce Cook referred to on BangShift at the following fantastic article by Brian Lohnes
http://bangshift.com/general-news/project-cars/ama...a-vfw-hall
is not the SCTA/BNI guy. North Carolina Bruce is a long time VW fellow (had a bug featured in HVW's in the 80's) and one of the charter 36hp Challenge racers.
Sorry, but details on the Wolfsburg West based engine are still under wraps. Development continues but it will be dual carbs (no supercharger or turbocharger!). The goal is to get the 130+ speed the old fashioned way, shear naturally aspirated horsepower combined with that very slippery T64 Volkswagen aero coupe!
Gonna be fun............................Burly |

I've been planning to go since Speed Week last year; but this year Speed Week and Burning Man are rained out. :( |

Lewism, as of today and the foreseeable future, World of Speed and the VW Challenge Maxx Speed Nats are a go! ! ! !
Racing begins Sept 6 and goes through the 9th. Hours have been expanded to accommodate many of the Speedweek racers who were rained out and are now joining the WOS group. The VW Touareg V10 diesel powered streamliner will be racing as will a new 2014 VW Beetle GSR along with 30 to 40 other VW racers. Gonna be great. If you would like updates, PM me with your name, location and email address and I will add you to the VW Challenge Enews roster. You can also friend request on the new VW Challenge FB site at https://www.facebook.com/groups/36hpvw.challenge for VW land speed racing history and discussions.

Henry, the WW or Wolfsburg West categories are specific to using Wolfsburg West dual carb kits, "almost" or visually as they came from Wolfsburg West. Below are the guidelines for both the WW36 and DSS36 categories. As you will note, extensive modifications are allowed in DSS which are not legal in WW:
WW36*** (Wolfsburg West Kit)-Modified 36hp engines equipped with either Wolfsburg West kit number:
111 198 700 Complete Okrasa style dual port kit with original style linkage.
111 198 700A Complete Okrasa style dual port kit with CSP style bolt on linkage.
and installed in stock bodied Bug's, Ghias or pre 1967 Type 2's. Engine components must include WW cylinder heads with WW valves and ports, stock intake manifolds, WW Solex 32 PBIC style carburetors, and WW original or CSP style linkage as new from WW. The carburetors can be modified internally and jetting changed but must appear externally as new from WW. WW intake manifolds must appear externally as new from WW. Air cleaners can be removed. Can use Wolfsburg West 69mm stroker crankshaft(1285cc) and Wolfsburg West camshaft but must be specified with record claim. Requires any Bosch distributor and coil (Pertronix Ignitor is O.K.). No displacement or camshaft limitations. Must use 36hp VW factory style dual tip or Abarth style four tip aftermarket muffler (reproduction aftermarket factory style 2 and 4 tips are O.K.). No headers or extractor exhaust systems allowed.
*** Eligible for Wolfsburg West contingency award at USFRA World of Speed in September 2014 ! ! ! !

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111251055OK Site for Abarth style 4 tip stainless steel muffler details.
DSS36**** (Dual Super Stock)-Pre 1965 period style one or two barrel dual or single dual throat carburetors systems only (Weber 48 IDA carburetors are pre-1965 and are allowed), fitted to modified stock VW 36hp cylinder heads or period aftermarket 36hp dual port cylinder heads(or replicas like Wolfsburg West Okrasa heads )! Requires any Bosch distributor and coil. Dual spark plug conversions O.K. . No displacement, camshaft or header limitations. Handcrafted intake manifolds are O.K. . Carburetor(s) must be under the deck lid without bumps or scoops or external cutouts. Deck lid stand-offs are not allowed!
**** Eligible for Wolfsburg West contingency award at USFRA World of Speed in September, 2014 ! ! ! !
The WW category was originated to encourage use of the WW kits since Wolfsburg West has done so much to bring 36hp engines back to the forefront.
I hope this was helpful in explaining the differences.................
