Has anyone removed an old poorly done paint job to reveal the original paint underneath? Is this a complete waste of time or a reasonable solution? My bus has very little body filler and I believe the original paint to be in better shape than the off color chipping paint curently on the exterior. I think a worn OG paint job is sooo cool. IMHO. This is not my bus, but this is what I would imagine mine would look like if the crappy paint was removed. Any advice would be appricated.

if your bus is straight, OG paint looks great, just some sanding then some buffing to smooth and get some shine. that red bus looks great :D

In 1954 my dove blue kombi was painted red as a fire service vehicle over the years somhow the paint has sort of washed off!!!!, well as you can see in the picture i wet sanded the rear right corner top half, it took me about 3 hours of carfull hand sanding, but was well worth the effort, the original paint is celulose and if you sand back you the OG paint you can do blow in of celulose in areas and the bland sand the two areas together , you cant do this with modern 2pack, so it worth sanding away.

A little at a time. the 55 by my 54 isnt OG paint.

I've used "Safest Stripper" from the hardware store. It's a very weak stripper. It takes off a layer of primer or a layer of crappy paint very nicely. I lay some on and cover it with plastic wrap. Wait 5-10 minutes, then the paint washes right off with a hose. (Water-soluable)

It doesn't work if the 2nd paint job paint job was good quality.

I have also heard of using oven cleaner in a similar fashion.

I have also seen people use a razor blade. It works but it's a pain. I say let the magic of today's chemicals do the hard part for you.

Had between 2-6 layers of paint in varying quality.
Primary tool. Razor blades (2 boxes of them)
A little paint stripper to soften the bondo
Wire wheel to get at areas that were not savable
1000 and 1500 sandpaper
Alot of rubbing compound and polish
6 months and here it is

Do it, you will be glad you did
