I don't really want to pick on you but tieing down your car in this manner does not appear very safe. There is nothing really preventing the car from coming forward in a panic stop. The car will roll right over the 2X4's and could climb the trailer rail. This could tear up your square or even damage the tow vehicle. We all think it will be ok but "stuff happens'. Just trying to save someone else the headache of damage. I am by no means an expert but I would recommend front axle beam to front of trailer with two separate straps and rear torsion to rear of trailer with two straps.

Thanks, Doug. My grandfather strapped Scone down, so I was just letting him do what he thought was best.

so the other day I was driving and the shifter went out. What I mean by that is that I only had first gear and couldn't do any other gear. And the gear pattern was non-existent.

The guys on the type three forum helped me in locating my issue as the shift coupling. I went under one time and couldn't find it, but then was able to with more help.

This morning I went under and realized this is my issue:

First of all, I was missing the plate that is supposed to cover the shift coupler. And also, the bolt that connects the rod to the coupler is gone!

so at least I know that is the issue.

I also think there's a leak coming from here:

What exactly is this? Suspension?

It's right behind the shift coupler opening. by a foot or so.

it looks like your leaking gear oil, one from your nosecone, and two from your side covers or axle boots. the seal in the nosecone is easy but the tranny has to come out, and while its out its always a good idea to replace the boots.

This is what I suggested you look at on the list. You'll need to get a new square headed set screw for it. ISP should have one. You could also try your local hardware store, but I think it needs to be metric. IF you have a good VW (or Import) parts store you might get lucky and find one there. Ideally it'll have a hole thru the head for safety wiring it, so it won't "fall out", or loosen.

^ I agree, personally what i did with mine was found a short metric allen head bolt , chamfered the tip and tightened the living piss out of it, never had a problem with that bastid again :twisted:

I was lucky enough to be able to bike an hour to a pull a part yard that had a torn apart 69 beetle that I was able to take the squareheaded bolt out.

I wire wrapped it up last night, but it's dirty in there since that cover is still missing. I've already asked someone selling one on the samba about shipping. We'll see where that goes.

Another problem though, as it appears I'm missing bolts.....

and maybe more leaks?

The only bolts I can see missing are the ones that hold the cooling tin to the engine case. That is pretty typical of a VW of 45 years. Go to your local VW shop, tell them you need some of the screws to hold the tin to the engine case and pick up about 2 dozen of them to have around. You will find that you will need them from time to time.

As far as the leaks go, looks like it is valve cover gasket leaks. The pictures are dark and blurry. When was the last time you replaced these? They typically need to be replaced every oil change / valve adjustment. Somewhere in that area. If you can bring the car to the light and get some pictures without shaking the camera, we might be able to track it down a little better.

That's what my grandfather had thought the problem was as well. We didn't change it last time we did the oil change, so thats what I have next on my list to do. Thanks c:
