So, with all the trouble I've had with my engine lately, I decided to clear my head of it and take a trip to see if I could find the impossible-to-locate thermostatic flap cable for my 69 air cleaner.
So, a couple hours away, up in the hills of the Ozarks
down a remote highway
and a county dirt road
Hidden back in the trees
is the Way Out Salvage VW graveyard. (Take that name seriously!)
Tons of VWs
And more VWs
And even more VWs :D
Rows of bugs
Type 2s
A couple of Things, a Ghia and a 914
Type 3s
More Type 3s
And more Type 3s
Some Vanagons
Groovy man!
Need windows?
Finally, what I came for--the air cleaner stash
And lo and behold!! :o
Also picked up a replacement driver's side heater box (mine is dented in) and a perfectly working wax thermostat for a 71 air cleaner. Thanks Way Out!! |

Sweet! Good job on locating the elusive pre-heat cable! What did they charge you for it? |

$25. Not too bad IMO.. I was also worried that even if I found one it wouldn't have the sheathing with it- but it's all here.
Can't believe I found the cable but still couldn't find the clip that holds it in place on the air cleaner flap! :? Guess I'll figure something out..
Also if you saw my Empi Sucks thread you'll notice my drivers side heater box was dented in and messed up at the exhaust outlet pipe. So I went ahead and picked up a new heater box ($40), along with the WORKING wax thermostat for 71 air cleaner ($10). |

I looked up the part number for that clip in my parts book. I thought it was used for something else as well. I had no luck searching the internet with the part number for the clip. It's NLA from VW.
You should put up a WTB add in the classifieds with a pic of that clip. I'm sure there's a bunch out there and the pic will help someone go look for it. In the mean time, go to your local hardware store. They usually have many diff types of clips. |

Thanks- yeah I'm pretty sure I can figure something out. I may even already have something in my tool box that will work (I used an old car stereo mounting "ear" as a replacement clip to hold the metal fuel line against the side of the fan shroud in the engine bay-- worked great!) |

That place is epic! I went there about five years ago when I was visiting family in Arkansas. It sure is way out there. I ended up cobbling a ton of 67 only stuff off a couple different cars. They even went to work pulling out a steering column, tube and 67 only locking ignition for me. Great guys! Cool place.. |

The weeds are really under control. Usually I imagine those type of yards as overgrown jungles. |

They must use sheep or goats to keep it grazed down or it would be an overgrown jungle. |

I don't recall any sheep or goats out there.. I think they just mow the rows regularly.
Here's a couple pics from when I was there.
They had no problem grabbing tools and pulling parts for me.
