I have a guy who has a few 356 cranks for sale, cheap, they were left outside and developed some surface rust.
Can these be shot peened or derusted or other method and reground to a useable form?
Or are they DUNZO?

| These cranks are a minimum of 50 years old. They must have been unusable at one time. If your building an engine for yourself I would highly recommend a new SCAT crank... |

Yes, useable in a motor. They were apparently stored outside accidentally for a couple months....prior to this they were stored inside along with a stash of parts.
Yes or now? What process would be used? |

| Please define "some surface rust." Pictures? What kind of cranks? Counterweighted? Hirth roller bearing? Have they been measured, are they second or third under? Too many unanswered questions--help us out here. |

For the price of a 356 crank they are worth checking out. Yes, a crank can be polished on a lathe to remove surface rust and if it's not too deep and the crank wasn't too worn to begin with it can remain within spec and be used. If it's still std it can be turned down for os bearings. If one or two journals are toasted they can be welded and ground back std. A machine shop can do lots of things to rebuild a crankshaft, price dictates whether it's worth repairing.
And if any of you are throwing away genuine Porsche parts to replace with new chinese stuff like scat send it my way :lol: |
