In the front, under the torsion bar. In the rear, under the shock mounts, or if you prefer to lift the whole rear and leave the suspension hanging, you can place the jack tray under the transaxle and get the whole ass end up. Caution: can mark transaxle case this way. I've also seen it done right under the sump plate. |

This has been discussed many times. If you jack up the rear, use a 2x6 that is wide enough to span the wishbone of the transmission.
*NEVER EVER* jack up a VW by the oil pan. [-X |

Thanks again guys. I got her jacked up in front, by the torsion bar tube, about 18 inches. Stuck a couple of jack stands on the bar and went to work. I was able to install a new steering damper, what a biatch, trying to get the threaded stud into the bushing. I spent an hour working alone trying to get it into the bushing, sucess is sweet. Also adjusted the front wheel bearings to get all the play out of the front end. Darkness fell, I can't drive at night so i'll have to wait till manyana to test drive.

I wouldn't jack up the rear end from the transaxle as it puts too much stress on the rear transaxle mounts. I use the cross member that the rear transaxle mounts bolt to. |

i've been searching all over on where to put the jack stands in the rear (on a 70 irs ghia), and i want to be absolutely sure i get it right...
jason said for jacking the rear, to put the jack stands under the shock mounts. is that what everybody does? it seems like the car could slip off. i had it in mind to throw a stand each torsion bar tube on the INSIDE of the spring plate (not on that knubby end outside the plate).
what's the best way? |

I put my stands under the mounts for the jack. I get the car up in the air by putting my floor jack under the spot where the transmission meets the motor and use a piece of scrap 2x4 inbetween that spot and the floor jack. The car is VERY solid. |

I jack up the front and place jack stands under the front torsion tubes.
In the rear I put the jack under the cross member that holds the rear tranny mounts and put the jack stands under the spring plate stops by turning the jack stands 90 degrees. |

I push and pull on the car like an SOB to make sure it isn't going anywhere. I also make sure the front is up on stands too and it is on level concrete. I've done this numerous times, but my car is rust free (with the execption of a spot on the driver side pan) and solid. |

Nope, I said you could put the jack under the shock mounts for the purpose of lifting the car. Once it's up, I put the jack stands under each torsion bar tube outboard of the spring plate. |

I put mine under the stock jacking squares. I start by working work it up by placing a 4X4 block of wood under the tire and going to the other side and doing the same on that jacking square then back again and get it high e`nuff to put the Jack stand under torsion tube end in the fender well and go to the other side and finish. I start in the rear first as you don't want to pull it off the front jackstands and the front is lighter to jack the whole car up from the middle as your not lifting the motor/trans/car. |
