Thanks.
This is the model that I went with ...

The WB and classic styling was a strong selling point for me. I use my phone for music, so the audio in was all I really needed. I might make use of the video outs at some point though. |

Yeah, me too. The bays and even early Vanagons had "happier" colors. I don't much like the dark colors of the late Vanagons.

Yeah, it's an amazing build.
My next thought was I hope he doesn't like in Oregon or Washington so he doesn't get his bus stolen by drug fiends. |

I don't live in Oregon ... but I hope to one day! |

Oddly enough, the awning was the first thing that I had bought for the van years ago. For no other reason than it was steeply discounted, to make way for a new model coming out. The problem with these older ones, was gaining enough clearance to drill a hole through the mounting bracket (from GoWesty, cookie from Van Café). One tool in my box that has paid for itself several times over, is this tight fit right angle drill attachment …

This made short work of what could have been a pain in the arse. I opted to install the body mounted cleats, to simply set up for various terrain.

It looks like you have an OBD reader right in front of the steering wheel, care to share brand and model? That's the exact same location I've installed my ScanGauge II, can you do a comparison between them? |

It's an Ultragauge ...

Cheaper than a Scangauge and just as functional, with the bonus of having a larger display. They also have a variety of mounting options. This is the mount that I used, and it fits well, attached on top of the upper steering wheel trim ...

Others before me have used the Ultragauge with the Bostig conversion. There are a handful of post scattered around the forum. |

Kinda cheating on the Club Joker emblem
Where did you find the Westfalia-Werke sticker? I just finished scrapping off the last faded remnants of mine yesterday. |

Hey, I think I earned it 8)
The label came from ...

The site is a bit wonky to navigate, but good quality product. The decal is more of a silverish grey, compared to the original black, but that worked out better for me. |

Excellent! Thanks for the link. My decal was silver-so perfect match.
Hey, it's your van, you can do whatever ya want. I'm just messing. 8) |

I'm intrigued by the Westfalia door tag. Do the serial Number or ID # tie into anything with the VIN?
I have a Multivan clone and would love to have that on my door. I see he makes some other cool decals, I just need to figure out what to put on My Door sticker.

There is still a good bit of work to be done before it's trip ready. A basic interior at the least would be nice. :) |

The I.D. # is the last of the VIN, the production date is obvious, and the "H" is for the model year (1987). The digit part of the serial number is made up, since this is clearly not factory. I chose the area code from where I used to live.
This is also where I got my fuel type decals. |

Lastly, a little decal implementation for the finishing touches. I wanted to incorporate a little more of the grey, and the decals were a good opportunity to do so. I also thought black decals might be a little too stark of a contrast. I ended up going through a few sets of the Club Joker decals. The problem with the ones that are available is that they are either way to small, the lettering is not correct, or both. I messaged Samba member lodcomm, who sells various decals, and asked him if he had the files to cut Club Joker decals. He said he did, but they really needed refining. We ended up going back and forth for a while, making minor alterations, reviewing photos online, figuring out sizing and running a trial set. The second set proved to be a winner. On the factory decals, the shaded half of the diamond is mirrored opposite to each side. To my knowledge, none of the available sets for sale include this detail. So if you are looking for an accurate reproduction of the originals, lodcomm can make it happen. This wraps up the paint and body phase, next up will be the interior, but it will probably be a little bit before I get started on it. I have been putting in a lot non-stop hours, and I need to take a break. Thanks again for the kind words.

Heck with the mud, I have seen plenty of Syncro rigs with mud! I would really like to see this machine in person before any dirt. Are you going to show it anywhere? Maybe some local VW shows during the summer?
If you live anywhere near the West Coast we have an ALL EUROPEAN CAR and MOTORCYCLE SHOW in middle of July called "Gathering Of Friends" in San Luis Obispo, California. We have a class for VW Buses and as one of the organizers and I can help you if interested. PM if interested.
Anyway great work! |
