hi. are all aftermarket chrome door trim the same? is there one company that makes them better than the other? any opinions on the stainless steel trim i see on ebay? thanks!

The restoration"correct" trim strips are made of annodized aluminum. They are not quite as bright or as durable as the stainless. I usually buy all my stuff through Karmann Ghia Parts and Restoration. They are on the web.

nope...they are not all the same. I would stay away from any of the cheap ones available out there - by "cutting corners" you'll end up with thin and easily dented moldings...
I personally bought mine from www.vwispwest.com (the ones normally found for auction on eBay) -> Top notch quality and good customer service - These are your only option (my opinion).

Not all are the same and some are completely incorrectly made reproductions. Depending on the year and individual type of molding your trying to replace determines if it was polished (heavy) aluminum or chrome plated. Assuming you want to keep your car original.

In my opinion there is no one place but several places that offer what your looking for. The problem is getting one place to have all of what you need. The best places (in my opinion) are:

Karmann Ghia Parts Warehouse (http://www.karmannghia.com/ ) , they offer quality products and sell used, repaired, and reproductions of the same item.

House of Ghia ( http://www.house-of-ghia.com/ )only sells high quality stuff including the trim you are looking for. Their web site is poor on items but their catalog is priceless and full of real information.

Koche’s (http://www.kochs.com ) , you will have to call them because they don’t sell these from a catalog but they only deal in the real thing. Ask for Rubin.

Small Car Connection (http://www.chrisvolkswagen.com/ ) , has a good supply of NOS parts and in many cases can provide good used cores for re-plating or polishing. No catalog, you will have to call them. Ask for John or little Chris.

You may want to call Wolfsburg West (http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/index.html ) and see if they reproduce them. I did not discover them when I did my Ghia but they had the best reproductions by far for my two bugs.

I have not looked at the SS trim on eBay but I have seen other SS trim reproductions and the quality looks good. However, the ones I’ve seen have been reproduced incorrectly. The Ghia body molding has uniquely individual pieces. The stuff I looked at was rounded the same (as opposed to sharper/shaped) on the ends. Probably looks good but a Ghia perfectionist would spot as incorrect.
