View original topic: Keys and locks through the years

I've perused the different posts regarding keys and locks for ignitions and door handles. Here is what I have come up with. Maybe someone can fill in the blanks or provide corrections and we can make this a sticky:

Type 1

1946 - December 31 1951:
Ignition = A profile key (Number stamped on ignition cylinder face),

Door handle = Y profile (four tumblers)

1952 - December 31 1953:
Ignition = P profile key (Number stamped on ignition cylinder face),

Door Handle = G profile (five tumblers)

1954 - 1959:
All keys SG profile (six? tumblers)

1960 only:
All keys SE profile

1961 - 1966:
All keys SC, SV, or SU profile

1967 - 1970:
All keys K profile

1971 - 1979:
All keys M profile

Type 2

1950 - December, 1951:
Ignition = A profile key (Number stamped on ignition cylinder face),
Door handle = E,Z,D,V,F profile (four tumblers)

1952 - February 28, 1953:
Ignition = P profile key (Number stamped on ignition cylinder face),
Door Handle = E,Z,D,V,F profile (4 tumblers)

March 1, 1954 - August 5, 1963:
All keys the same, E,Z,D,V,or F profile (5+1 tumblers)

1964 - 1966:
All keys T profile

1967 - 1970:
All keys L profile

1971 - 1979:
All keys R profile

Im a little confused about the 53 type 1 door and ignition keys. Is it all of 53 had the "p" ignition key and "g" door key....or did they switch mid year to the "sg" ignition and door key or a mix of both to use up parts before the switch?

All 53s had a G type door key. SG first appeared on Jan 1 54.

What about the differences in the lock cilinders; for example should a SV ('61-'66) cilinder fit a 54 ice pick door handle that should have the SG cilinder lock?

Thx!

should that be march 1953, otherwise what was used from feb 53 to 54...?

I fixed it, here's the correct info for the above

Type 2

1952 - February 28, 1954:
Ignition = P profile key (Number stamped on ignition cylinder face),
Door Handle = E,Z,D,V,F profile (4 tumblers)

March 1, 1954 - February 28, 1955:
Ignition = P profile key (Number stamped on ignition cylinder face),
Door handle = E,Z,D,V,F profile (5+1 tumblers)

March 1, 1955 - August 5, 1963:
Door handle = E,Z,D,V,F profile (5+1 tumblers)

The handles are the 2-3 exterior handles with locks - Driver's door handle, cargo door handle, and decklid T-handle (Barndoor only)

I'd like to try to cut keys for my ignition, but I'm missing a few critical pieces of information, maybe someone can help fill in the blanks? I have a P code ignition, which is supposed to use a 90º angle at the notch like the A code. I have the code for the 4 tumblers, 1-2-3-4. What I don't have is how the number corresponds to the depth of the cut. Is a "2" in the code a 2mm deep cut? Is it 2mm from one of the grooves on the key?
Any help is much appreciated, I'm trying to find something I can do in the house while it's 10º out in the barn.

Here is the spacing from the shoulder and depth info for P key.

Excellent information. Thank you! Where is this from?

This info isn't in the VW locksmithing books or the old Reed code books.
I have access to locksmith information - looks like your depth code 1 2 3 4 starting from the shoulder of the key corresponds to key code P172

I just typed the info into an excel spreadsheet....
Good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing. 1-2-3-4 was just an example. But now that I know what the depth of the cuts are, and distances from the shoulder I should be able to decipher the codes I have. The lock I'm working on is probably P59, but may be P69. Wish me luck!

Sent you a pm with P59/69 codes. Have fun.
