Is there a way to tell exactly what engine number was in your car? I have the birth certificate. But it just says I have the wrong motor. Which I have an April 4th 57 car and think if I remember it's a June 57 motor. |

hi Jrb572!
do you have the papers from your car? if so check them out, you will find your engine number in there! if you don't have papers, it's going to be difficult!
best regards

You are correct, thanks. Updated my post. The sad thing is I double checked it this morning to make sure I was getting it within the correct month with the numbers on the charts falling at the end of the month. Obviously failed. |

My birth certificate paper work only shows the motor number I sent them which is the incorrect motor. |

I'm looking for a 59 engine from Apr/May between 2-943-920 and 2-996-628
I do have a complete 56 engine Mar/Apr with number 1-405-928. This engine is complete, turns over free by hand, has compression (should be rebuilt). 28 PCI carb, fuel pump and distributor with a Mann round mushroom top oil bath air cleaner 111-129-611E that I would be willing to trade for a similiar 59 engine. |

can you post a pic of your certificate? Ive been curious to see how they print it when you tell them your engine number and its the wrong one. hopefully they just put the number you provided and wrote an accompanying letter stating its the wrong engine, instead of writing wrong engine on birth certificate itself. id love to see what yours says!!!!! |

Who knows what the museum does at this point (or from one case to the next). Here is flyertim's BC - pretty extensive and the engine info is on a separate letter.
Jrb572 - as to your issue, even knowing the engine #, it's almost certainly toast. But if you so desire you can pretty much figure out a very small range of possible numbers. The factory was on a 2 shift 5 day work schedule. Take the last engine # for June & subtract the last # for may. Find the number of work days for June of that year. Divide the total engines by those days and multiple by the number of work days from the start f the month until when your car was built. There you have it a range of about 3000 engine #s. |

What a weird birth certificate: a 6V battery and a 12 volt system (which would be standard??)? And dual-circuit brake system? All on an oval era car? Something smells funny here...
Who the heck composes these birth certificates at the Stiftung Automuseum VW? Regular desk clerks? And there are disclaimers all over, wow!
Weird, right? |

For combination codes like 350 the factory lists everything that was included when 350 was last used (example: 1967). So it can list things that do not apply to earlier vehicles.
I would be surprised if they knew exactly what 350 included for each year. |
