A friend of mine gave me this vw bug (64 chassis / 67 engine?) that was converted to a beach buggy back in the 70s.
I've torn most of the engine apart and tried to remove the crank case and small amount of other pieces still attached. The case is stuck.
After fiddling around and jacking the engine up and down and the transmission up and down and the entire car up and down and wiggling and pulling with all my might I can only get the engine to move 1/4" or so. Maybe 1/2" if I have the clutch pedal wedged down (see first pic - clutch out [left] vs clutch in [right]). The vehicle was obviously not cared for or stored properly.
When wiggling the engine around a little I can see all 4 bolts are loose (simply in place to keep the engine from falling if I do manage to break it free) and not snagging at all. No other cables or linkages seem to be attached as my end goal here is to rebuild the entire case anyway.
Is the engine rusted (duh, yes) to the transmission? to the clutch? Any advice?

Are you sure you don't have an insert in the case for one or more of the bolts? Later cases had a pressed-in threaded insert instead of a nut on one of the top bolts, since the doghouse cooler would block wrench access.
Starter is not rusted or jammed to the flywheel? (remove it).
Then maybe the tranny input shaft rusted to the gland nut? |

Top two are bolts that are loose. Bottom passenger side is a bolt that is loose. Bottom driver's side is a stud without the nut and wiggles/floats freely when the engine is wiggled. also the 1/2" gap exists between the transmission case and the engine case when the clutch is in at the point of that stud. So it's not snagging.
Starter was removed.

any thoughts on what to do if this is the problem? :) |

Your clutch disc is rusted/seized to the trans input shaft splines.
You may be able to access the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel thru the starter hole. (I've never had to try it)
You could also use a holesaw to cut a hole thru the upper part of the bellhousing to access those bolts. |

^ thank you guys.
Also managed to find this porsche thread that helped illustrate ( forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-912-technical-forum/531969-seperating-engine-transmission-after-break.html ).
Unfortunately none of my s**t turns because it's so rusted. Fun times ahead. I will update when I've split the two or destroyed the transmission. :D |

spray a lot of pb blaster in thru the starter hole and let it soak then spray some more should lube it up enough to gently pry it free after awhile
btw put something under it so it doesn't fall more then a few inches the case may still be good after letting it drop to the ground could crack it |
