Might be the oil temb switch. Check to see if it still has its wires or just replace it. That would be my best guess. Oil may not be getting into it, Or it may be clogged up. High pressure air blown in it to clear it out.

Just ideas.

Are you SURE you are overheating it. It's quite normal for a VW with some miles on the engine to have an oil light which flickers at idle and then goes out as the rpms rise.

An idle which is a little low will accentuate it too - it should idle at 850rpm.

A rough but effective check for an overheating engine is the dipstick - if you can hold the ring without it QUITE burning your fingers it's OK. A hot runnign engine will often smell of hot oil too.

If all your tinware is in place (and no unused holes in it), if you have cooling flaps, thermostat and the under-cylinder and under-head flat deflector plates in place, and the engine rubber seals are in good condition, then it's unlikely that your engine is overheating.

Using a thin oil in hot weather can make the oil-flicker worse too. 10w30 is fine for a snowy climate, but 20w50 works better for all other situations, and if the engine is starting to burn some oil (getting a little tired) then a 25w60 (yes 60) works very well at maintaining oil pressure and delaying the inevitable rebuild.
