Hi,
I have a bone stock '66 Bug with a 6volt.
I am trying to figure out how to wire the generator to the voltage regulator and am afraid I am going to short something or destroy the VR and Gen if I mess this up.
As I look at my generator in the engine compartment, the left side (driver's side) has 1 wire. The other side has 2 wires (pass. side)
The paperwork that I got with the generator says that the single wire on the left are DF and the two wires on the right are B+ and B+
Here is what I don't understand:
There are 2 connections on the front of the regulator. I am pretty sure the left wire goes to the left screw connection, and the 2 right wires go to the right screw connection.
On the left side of the Voltage regulator, it says F (simply F, not DF like the paperwork that came with my generator states).
The other side it says:
61 B+
7V 45A
I took photos of the wires going to the battery, and the 7V which I think is the gen idiot light.
My question is:
Does the left wire from the generator that says DF go to the left side of the regulator front screw and the 2 wires leaving the generator labeled B+ go to the right front screw?
Thanks. |

Maybe these photos of my VR ('63 - 6v) will help or at least help visualize what you are working with.

Thanks.
I have all the wires figured out except for the ones coming out of the generator. I still can't make it out.
Does the one wire coming out of the generator on the left side as you look at the generator go to the left screw, the only marking anywhere near that left screw is an F written on the left side of the voltage regulator. The paperwork I got with the new generator calls that wire DF
Do the other two wires coming out of the right side of the generator (identified as B+ and B+) connect together and get screwed into the right side of the regulator? Once again, there are no markings on the connectors with the screws.
There are no markings whatsoever on the regulator where the two screws are. |

I have spent the last 6 hours researching the internet and still can't find a definitive answer on where the wires leaving my 6volt generator connect to my voltage regulator.
The other wires to the voltage regulator are connected, so I am good there. It is just the wires FROM the Generator going TO the Voltage Regulator that I am not sure of.
The paperwork that I got with the new generator identifies the single wire coming from the left side of the generator (as it sits in the engine) as DF, and the two wires coming from the right side of the generator are both identified as B+
Speaking only of the left side of the generator and left screw connection of the voltage regulator that is now attached to the top of the Generator; On the left side (driver's side) of the Voltage regulator as it sits on top of my generator, it is stamped F (simply F, not DF). The paperwork that came with my generator labels the left wire from the generator as DF, so I am reluctant to attach it to the "F" connection on the Voltage Regulator.
The other side of the Voltage regulator (right side, passenger side when looking at the engine installed in the car) The Voltage Regulator is stamped:
61 B+
7V 45A
My question is:
Does the left single wire leaving the generator that is identified as DF on my generator paperwork go to the left side of the regulator front screw that is labeled simply F?
And do the 2 right wires leaving the right side of my generator identified as B+ on my generator paperwork go to the right front screw of the Voltage Regulator? There is nothing labeled on the voltage regulator for that right front screw, but the right side of the regulator is stamped:
61 B+
7V 45A
I have all of the wires hooked up to the Voltage regulator except for the generator to voltage regulator wires.
Any help you can give me is much appreciated.
There is not a whole lot out there on 6-volt Generators and VRs. I have not found anything with the lettering / numbers that match my Generator and VR.
I am probably being overly cautious, but I just don't want to destroy my charging system. |

The generator only has two connections (not counting ground)
On the 'other' side of the VR is B+, battery connection. 61, idiot light connection

I understand your caution completely. None of us wants to create a bigger problem to deal with on any project we work on, but especially the 6v electrical system given how difficult and expensive it can be to find quality replacement parts. I took photos of my VR/generator to use as reference when installing the new generator. Did you replace the VR as well? If so, is it configured differently than the old one? Posting photos of what you have in front of you is very helpful ... nothing gets lost in translation that way. If you have photos from before the wires were disconnected (with the old generator), that would be helpful as well. |
